Charlie Munger
Munger's whole thing is mental models. The idea is simple: instead of being an expert in one field, you learn the core concepts from as many different fields as possible — psychology, biology, physics, economics, history — and then use that whole toolkit to think about problems.
He calls it a latticework of mental models. It sounds like a self-help concept.
It's actually how he consistently made better decisions than almost everyone around him. On investing, he pushed Buffett away from his old mentor's approach — which was basically "find dirt-cheap companies and flip them fast" — toward something more durable: find the best businesses in the world and hold them forever.
The key word he uses is moat. A business so dominant that competitors can't touch it.
Think Coca-Cola. He was also deeply influenced by psychology, particularly the ways humans reliably fool themselves.
He gave a famous talk called "The Psychology of Human Misjudgment" listing 25 ways our brains get things wrong. Reading it once will change how you make decisions.

Lynch invented the phrase "tenbagger" — a stock that returns ten times your money. He was specifically looking for companies that could do that.
His method was deceptively simple: invest in what you know. Not what you know about macroeconomics or interest rates — what you know about everyday life.
What stores are you shopping at? What products are your kids obsessed with?
What new thing are you using that feels like it could be everywhere in five years? If you're noticing a company before Wall Street analysts have caught on, you have a real edge.
He categorized stocks into six types: slow growers (stable, boring), stalwarts (big companies, modest returns), fast growers (small and aggressive — where the tenbaggers live), cyclicals (tied to economic cycles), turnarounds (troubled companies that might recover), and asset plays (companies with hidden value the market hasn't priced in). His genius was applying rigorous fundamental analysis to companies most Wall Street analysts dismissed as too small or too mundane to bother with.

Invert. Always invert.
That's his most famous rule — borrowed from the mathematician Jacobi. Instead of asking "how do I succeed?" ask "what would guarantee failure, and then avoid those things." It sounds obvious.
Almost nobody actually does it. He believes the secret to a good life and good investing is the same: figure out what you want to avoid, avoid it relentlessly, and most good things follow.
On wealth: getting rich isn't the hard part — keeping it is. Most people blow up by using borrowed money, getting greedy at the top, or panicking at the bottom.
Don't do those things. On decisions: only make the big bet when you're very sure.
Be patient for a long time, then move fast when the opportunity is obvious.

He believed the average person has a real edge over professional fund managers — specifically the access to everyday life that analysts in offices don't have. You know which stores are packed on Saturday afternoon.
You know which new products your kids are obsessed with. Wall Street analysts often don't.
His most repeated principle: invest in what you know. His second: love a company's product is not sufficient on its own — you still need to understand the fundamentals.
Third: stomach matters more than brain in investing. The biggest thing separating successful investors from unsuccessful ones isn't intelligence — it's the ability to stay calm when the market drops 20 percent and everything feels like it's ending.
RISK TOLERANCE

Munger's approach to risk: don't take risks you don't understand, and don't take risks you don't need to. He kept things simple.
He concentrated into a small number of businesses he understood deeply. He never used borrowed money.
He kept large cash reserves. His view on diversification was almost the opposite of what most financial advisors tell you — he thought spreading money across 50 stocks was an admission that you hadn't done enough homework.
If you've done the work, you concentrate. If you haven't, maybe don't invest at all.

Lynch ran a very diversified portfolio — sometimes over 1,000 positions — which cuts against the concentration gospel of Buffett and Munger. He justified it simply: if you find enough genuinely great small companies, you don't need to pick just one.
Some will fail. The tenbaggers more than compensate.
He wasn't reckless — he did detailed fundamental research on every holding. But he was comfortable owning things that looked messy or unfamiliar on the surface if the numbers told a better story.
He famously said he'd rather own 20 stocks he didn't know well than five stocks he thought he knew perfectly. The point being: false confidence in a concentrated position kills you.
Breadth buys time.
THE PLAYBOOK

Munger lived in the same house in Los Angeles for most of his adult life. He was famously frugal — not in a miserable way, but in a "I genuinely don't care about most things money buys" way.
He flew commercial until fairly recently. He read obsessively.
He described himself as a book with legs. His children joked that he was more interesting to talk to than almost anyone alive, but would only engage on topics he found intellectually stimulating.
He donated massively to education — hundreds of millions to Harvard Law School, the University of Michigan, and other institutions, often with very specific conditions attached. He designed buildings as a hobby and funded their construction himself.
He died at 99 worth around $2.6 billion — extraordinary by any measure, and somehow modest given he sat next to one of the richest men in history for 45 years.

After retiring from Magellan in 1990, Lynch has spent most of his time on philanthropy. He and his wife Carolyn donated tens of millions to education through the Lynch Foundation, focusing on Catholic education and scholarship programs in Massachusetts.
He lives quietly for someone worth hundreds of millions. He speaks at Fidelity events occasionally, plays golf, and is generally not seeking attention.
He has said that the best decision he ever made was retiring at 46 — that no amount of money is worth missing your kids grow up.
BIGGEST WIN

See's Candies. In 1972, Munger convinced a reluctant Buffett to pay what seemed like an expensive price — $25 million — for a California candy company.
Buffett thought it was too much. Munger held firm.
See's has since generated over $2 billion in profit for Berkshire, basically funding dozens of other acquisitions. It also taught Buffett the single most important lesson of his career: paying a fair price for a great business beats getting a cheap price for a mediocre one.
That one deal changed the entire direction of Berkshire Hathaway.

Fannie Mae. Lynch bought it heavily in the mid-1980s when almost nobody wanted it.
It was a housing finance company drowning in problem mortgages. Lynch dug into the fundamentals and decided the problems were fixable and the underlying business was genuinely valuable.
He was right. The stock went from roughly $2 to $40.
That single position generated hundreds of millions for the fund. His Chrysler bet was similar — he bought heavily when the company was a bankruptcy rumor and almost no one else would touch it.
Both worked because Lynch was willing to do the research on things everyone else had already decided were too ugly to look at.
BIGGEST MISTAKE

Munger is famous for avoiding mistakes more than for making spectacular wins — his whole philosophy is about not doing stupid things. But he's admitted to a few.
He said Berkshire was too slow to move into BYD, China's electric vehicle company, despite knowing it was exceptional for years before they finally bought in. He also held too much Wesco Financial for too long when the money could have been put to better use elsewhere.
His most honest self-criticism: he wished he had moved faster when the evidence was already clear. For a man who spent his career warning others about psychological biases, he wasn't immune to them.

Selling great companies too soon. He got into Walmart early and sold too soon.
He did the same with several other retailers that went on to become enormous. By his own account, his biggest mistake pattern was taking profits on genuine multi-decade compounders before they had compounded enough.
He also acknowledged that managing a $14 billion fund was fundamentally different from managing $18 million. The sheer size limited which companies he could meaningfully invest in — you can't move the needle on a $14 billion fund by buying a $50 million company.
He burned himself out keeping up with over a thousand positions. He retired at 46.
He's said he doesn't regret it.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Charlie Munger
Charlie Munger grew up in Omaha — same city as Buffett, but they didn't know each other yet. His father was a lawyer.
So was his grandfather. Charlie became one too, but he was clearly more interested in figuring out how the world worked than in courtrooms.
He studied math at the University of Michigan, got drafted into World War II, trained as a meteorologist, and somehow ended up at Harvard Law School without ever finishing an undergraduate degree. Harvard took him anyway.
He graduated in 1948 and moved to California to practice law. He was good at it.
He was also quietly building a real estate business on the side that made him more money than law ever did. He and Buffett met at a dinner in Omaha in 1959.
Munger was 35. Buffett was 28.
By the end of the night, Buffett was trying to convince Munger to go into investing full time. It took about a decade.
Munger ran his own investment partnership from 1962 to 1975 — returned 24% annually while the market did 6.4%. Then he fully merged his career with Buffett's at Berkshire, where he stayed until his death in 2023.

Peter Lynch grew up in Newton, Massachusetts. His father died when Lynch was 10, and his mother had to work to keep the family going.
Lynch caddied at the Brae Burn Country Club to help out. One of his regular clients was D.
George Sullivan, president of Fidelity Investments. Sullivan eventually offered Lynch a summer job at Fidelity — the kind of break you earn by showing up and doing the work.
Lynch studied history, psychology, and philosophy at Boston College — not finance — and said later that was probably an advantage. Too many finance students learn to look at spreadsheets and miss the obvious things happening in front of them.
He got an MBA from the Wharton School, joined Fidelity full-time in 1969, and took over the Magellan Fund in 1977. At the time, Magellan had $18 million in assets and was closed to new investors.
When Lynch retired at 46 in 1990, it had $14 billion and was the largest actively managed mutual fund in the world. He beat the S&P 500 in 11 of his 13 years managing it.
He's been a vice chairman at Fidelity in an advisory capacity ever since.
COMPANIES & ROLES

Munger's main stage was Berkshire Hathaway, where he served as Vice Chairman from 1978 until he died. His role was hard to define on paper — he didn't run a fund or manage a portfolio.
What he actually did was talk to Buffett. That was worth a trillion dollars.
Before Berkshire, he ran his own investment partnership from 1962 to 1975 that crushed the market. He also controlled Wesco Financial, a small insurance and financial company he ran as a personal Berkshire subsidiary from 1973 to 2011, until Berkshire fully absorbed it.
Outside finance, he was obsessed with architecture — he personally designed several buildings, including a dormitory at the University of Michigan that his own architecture school rejected for violating design principles. He funded it anyway.

His entire professional life ran through Fidelity Investments. He managed the Magellan Fund from 1977 to 1990 — 13 years of sustained outperformance that has never been matched at that scale.
His major holdings during that run included Fannie Mae, which he rode from $2 to $40; Chrysler, which he bought near bankruptcy; and various retailers that nobody on Wall Street wanted to touch.
He was famous for finding companies in everyday life before analysts noticed them. He found Dunkin' Donuts because his wife liked the coffee.
He investigated L'eggs pantyhose after his wife bought them at a grocery store. He'd walk through a shopping mall and watch which stores were packed and which were empty — and then go home and read the financials to see if the story held up.

He's on record saying studying history at Boston College was more useful for investing than anything he learned at Wharton. The historical pattern recognition, the ability to contextualize events — that showed up in how he thought about cycles and companies.
