ANTHONY TAN

Founding Grab after being rejected by Uber — and building Southeast Asia's most valuable tech company

Netfigo Verdict
on Anthony Tan

Anthony Tan pitched a taxi app as a Harvard Business School class project, got rejected by Uber when he tried to partner with them, launched it himself in Malaysia in 2012, and built Grab into Southeast Asia's most comprehensive super app — operating in 8 countries with 35 million monthly active users. The SPAC listing at $40 billion was probably too aggressive on price, but the underlying business Tan built is the real thing.

CAREER & BACKGROUND

Anthony Tan was studying at Harvard Business School when he pitched a taxi-booking app idea as a class project in 2011. The idea did well academically.

He took it back to Malaysia, couldn't get Uber to acquire or partner with him, and launched it himself in 2012 as MyTeksi — later rebranded as Grab. Grab is now Southeast Asia's most comprehensive super app: ride-hailing, food delivery, financial services, insurance, healthcare, and logistics — operating across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

Grab went public on NASDAQ via SPAC in December 2021 at a $40 billion valuation — the largest SPAC merger in history at the time. By 2023 the share price had dropped significantly from the SPAC price, but Grab remains the dominant platform across eight Southeast Asian countries.

INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

Platform-first, category-dominant investing. Tan's theory is that Southeast Asia is too fragmented by country to be served by one-product businesses — you need a super-app that handles multiple daily needs and builds financial data across all of them.

His personal investment philosophy follows the same thesis: back platforms with network effects in emerging markets where the category leader can build an insurmountable lead.

THE PLAYBOOK

Money Habits

Works obsessively — known for being one of the hardest-working founders in Southeast Asian tech. Spent years personally courting every major investor and government regulator across eight countries to build Grab's operating licenses.

Lives in Singapore. The SPAC wealth creation was paper gains — he remains deeply invested in the long-term Grab story.

BIGGEST WIN

Building Grab into Southeast Asia's dominant ride-hailing platform and then expanding into financial services. Grab Pay and GrabFinance have given millions of previously underbanked Southeast Asians access to digital payments and small loans for the first time.

That is a genuine social impact alongside the business return.

BIGGEST MISTAKE

The SPAC listing at a $40 billion valuation in December 2021 was an aggressive price. The public market subsequently valued Grab significantly lower.

SPAC mergers during the 2020–2021 tech bubble almost universally disappointed on public market performance. Tan may have been better served by a traditional IPO at a more conservative valuation.

FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY

Southeast Asia is the next China — 680 million people, rapidly growing middle class, massive smartphone adoption, and years of underinvestment in digital infrastructure. The opportunity is enormous but requires patience and local expertise that outsiders consistently underestimate.

FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

Married to Chloe Tong. Children.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in Economics, University of Chicago. MBA, Harvard Business School.

QUOTES (5)

Financial inclusion is not charity. It is the largest commercial opportunity in Southeast Asia. Two hundred million people with smartphones and no bank account — that is a market.

Every government in the region told us no at some point. We did not fight governments — we partnered with them. That is the only way to build in this region.

Uber said no. That was the best thing that ever happened to Grab. We had to build it ourselves, which meant we built it right for Southeast Asia.

Southeast Asia is not one market. It is eight different markets that speak fifty languages and have ten different regulatory environments. The company that figures this out wins everything.

The SPAC was not the destination. The destination is being the infrastructure of daily life for 680 million people. We are early in that journey.
