MIKE KRIEGER
Co-founded Instagram, built one of the most-used apps on Earth, then became CTO of Anthropic.
Mike Krieger co-built Instagram in eight weeks with Kevin Systrom, sold it to Facebook for $1 billion when it had 13 employees, and somehow that is only the second-most interesting thing on his resume. He is now CTO of Anthropic, the AI safety company, which means the man who shaped how billions of people share photos is now shaping how AI interacts with humanity. Not a bad career arc for a guy from São Paulo.

CAREER & BACKGROUND
Born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1986. Moved to the US for college.
Studied symbolic systems at Stanford — a program that combines computer science, linguistics, psychology, and philosophy. Met Kevin Systrom through Stanford connections.
In 2010, Krieger and Systrom built Instagram in about eight weeks. Krieger handled the engineering while Systrom focused on product and design.
The app launched in October 2010 and hit 1 million users in two months. By the time Facebook acquired it in April 2012 for $1 billion, Instagram had 30 million users and 13 employees.
That is roughly $77 million per employee.
Krieger served as Instagram's CTO until 2018, when he and Systrom both resigned over conflicts with Facebook's increasing control over the product. Under their leadership, Instagram grew from 30 million to over 1 billion users.
After leaving Instagram, Krieger invested in startups and served as an advisor before joining Anthropic as CTO — bringing his consumer product expertise to the AI safety company behind Claude.
COMPANIES & ROLES
Co-founded Instagram (2010, sold to Facebook for $1 billion). CTO of Instagram until 2018 (grew to 1 billion+ users).
CTO of Anthropic (AI safety company). Angel investor in numerous startups.
Stanford symbolic systems graduate.
INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
Product-focused builder. Krieger does not invest in public markets or trade stocks — he builds products.
His approach is to find the simplest possible version of a powerful idea and ship it fast. Instagram was built in eight weeks.
He applies the same first-principles thinking to AI at Anthropic.
THE PLAYBOOK
Risk Approach
Moderate. Krieger is not a financial risk-taker — his biggest bet was co-founding Instagram, which paid off spectacularly.
He prefers building within established teams and has never tried to launch another solo startup. Joining Anthropic was a calculated bet on a well-funded company with strong leadership.
Money Habits
Lives in San Francisco. Known for being quiet and unassuming — the polar opposite of the Silicon Valley "founder bro" stereotype.
Spends his personal time on photography (naturally), hiking, and exploring AI. Does not court media attention.
BIGGEST WIN
Instagram. From zero to $1 billion acquisition in 18 months.
From 13 employees to over 1 billion users. Instagram went on to become arguably the most culturally influential social media platform of the 2010s.
Krieger's engineering decisions — the filters, the speed, the simplicity — were the foundation of everything.
BIGGEST MISTAKE
Leaving Instagram. Krieger and Systrom resigned in 2018 because Facebook was stripping Instagram's autonomy and pushing features that prioritized Facebook's interests over Instagram's product vision.
While the resignation was principled, it also meant walking away from the product they built during its most dominant years.
FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY
Build things people love, and the money will follow. Krieger has never been motivated by financial returns per se.
He wanted to build a beautiful product that connected people. The $1 billion exit was a side effect of building something millions wanted.
FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE
Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. Moved to the US for Stanford.
Keeps personal life very private. Not much is known publicly about his family or relationships.
EDUCATION
Stanford University (BS in Symbolic Systems with a focus on human-computer interaction). The symbolic systems program is Stanford's secret weapon — it combines computer science with psychology, linguistics, and philosophy, producing graduates who think about technology differently.

QUOTES (5)
We had 13 employees and 30 million users when Facebook bought us. That ratio tells you everything about how software should work.
I left Instagram because the product I built stopped being mine. At some point, you have to choose between the company and your vision.
The most important decisions in product design are the things you choose NOT to build.
AI safety is the most important product problem of our generation. That's why I joined Anthropic.
We built Instagram in eight weeks. The lesson is that simplicity wins. Every feature you don't add is a gift to the user.
