Airbyte is the open-source tool that moves data from Point A to Point B. Sounds boring. Is actually one of the most important pieces of modern data infrastructure. Michel Tricot and John Lafleur built an open-source data integration platform with 350+ connectors — moving data from every SaaS app, database, and API into data warehouses. $181 million raised because every company needs to move data and most of them hate how they currently do it.

airbyte.comTHE ORIGIN STORY
Michel Tricot and John Lafleur were data engineers who were frustrated with existing data integration tools. Fivetran was expensive.
Stitch was limited. Building custom connectors was time-consuming.
Every data team was solving the same problems independently.
They founded Airbyte in 2020 to build an open-source alternative to Fivetran. The open-source approach meant anyone could build and share connectors, creating a community-driven ecosystem that grew faster than any proprietary alternative.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Open-source core with a managed cloud service (Airbyte Cloud). Self-hosting is free.
Airbyte Cloud charges based on data volume synced. Enterprise features include SSO, RBAC, and dedicated support.
The open-source community contributes connectors, which reduces development costs and accelerates the catalog.
THE PRODUCTS
Airbyte Open Source — free, self-hosted data integration platform. Airbyte Cloud — managed data integration service.
350+ pre-built connectors (databases, SaaS apps, APIs, files). CDC (Change Data Capture) for real-time database replication.
Connector Builder — create custom connectors without code.
HOW THEY GREW
Open-source community growth. Airbyte’s GitHub repository reached 10,000+ stars within a year of launch.
The connector catalog grew to 350+ through community contributions. Companies that start with self-hosted Airbyte often migrate to Airbyte Cloud as they scale.
THE HARD PART
Fivetran is the market leader with deeper enterprise penetration. Data reliability is critical — a single failed sync can break dashboards and reports.
Maintaining 350+ connectors as source APIs change is an ongoing challenge.
