Ambience Healthcare is trying to fix the most hated part of being a doctor, which is the paperwork. Founded in 2020 by two MIT friends, it builds an AI that listens to a doctor-patient visit and writes the clinical note automatically. OpenAI and Kleiner Perkins co-led a $70 million round in 2024. Then a $243 million Series C in 2025 pushed its value past $1 billion. Turns out the killer app for AI in medicine might just be typing less.

Michael Ng and Nikhil Buduma met at MIT. Both had seen the medical system up close, and both had noticed how much of a doctor's day disappears into typing.
Doctors spend hours writing notes, coding visits for billing, and clicking through records. Ng and Buduma started Ambience Healthcare in 2020 to hand that work to an AI.
Ng runs the company as CEO. Buduma leads the science as chief scientist.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Doctors and hospitals are drowning in admin work. Every visit has to be documented, coded for insurance, and filed correctly.
Ambience sells an AI platform that does that automatically. Its scribe listens to the visit and writes the note.
Its coding tool tags the visit for billing. Health systems pay for the software, usually per doctor.
The pitch to a hospital is blunt. Your doctors see more patients and burn out less.
THE PRODUCTS
AutoScribe is the headline product, an AI that listens to a visit and drafts the clinical note in real time. There is also a coding tool that tags each visit for billing, which is where hospitals actually lose money when it is done wrong.
Together they cover documentation, coding, and workflow in one platform. The idea is to be the AI operating system a health system runs on, not just a note-taker.
HOW THEY GREW
Ambience went after health systems, not solo doctors, from the start. Landing one big hospital network means hundreds of doctors at once.
It also built more than a scribe. The platform handles documentation, medical coding, and clinical workflow, so it becomes harder to rip out once installed.
And it rode the OpenAI relationship hard, tuning its tools on frontier models and even claiming its coding beat human clinicians by 27 percent in one test. Having OpenAI's own fund as a backer did not hurt the sales pitch.
THE HARD PART
Healthcare is the hardest place to sell software. Sales cycles are long, regulation is heavy, and a mistake in a medical note is not a typo, it is a liability.
Ambience has to prove its AI is accurate enough for doctors to trust with real patients. It also faces a crowded field.
Abridge, Nuance, and others are chasing the same AI-scribe market. Winning means being both the most accurate and the most deeply wired into how hospitals actually run.

WHO BACKED THEM
Ambience has pulled in a who's who of AI and healthcare money. OpenAI's Startup Fund and Kleiner Perkins co-led a $70 million round in February 2024.
Then Oak HC/FT and Andreessen Horowitz co-led a $243 million Series C in 2025 that valued the company above $1 billion. Optum Ventures, the venture arm of a giant US health insurer, is also in.
That mix of AI, venture, and healthcare insiders is about as strong as a backer list gets.

Abridge
Abridge is Ambience's biggest rival in AI medical scribes, also racing to turn doctor-patient conversations into clinical notes. Both are betting AI can end healthcare's paperwork misery.
OpenAI
OpenAI's Startup Fund co-led Ambience's $70 million round and its models power the platform. It is a flagship example of OpenAI backing a vertical AI application in medicine.
