APPLIED INTUITION

Netfigo Verdict
on Applied Intuition

Applied Intuition builds simulation software for autonomous vehicles. Instead of driving millions of real miles to test self-driving cars, their customers run billions of simulated miles on Applied Intuition's platform. It's like a video game engine for autonomous vehicles, except the stakes are life and death. Every major AV company — and increasingly every automaker — uses simulation, and Applied Intuition has become the default platform. Valued at $6 billion. The boring but essential pick-and-shovel play of the self-driving gold rush.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Qasar Younis was a partner at Y Combinator and previously co-founded a startup that went through YC. Peter Ludwig had worked on autonomous vehicle technology.

They noticed that every AV company was spending enormous resources building internal simulation tools — and that most of those tools were mediocre. Testing autonomous vehicles in the real world is slow, expensive, and dangerous.

Simulation is the only way to test millions of edge cases (a child running into the road, black ice, construction zones) without actually endangering anyone. They founded Applied Intuition in 2017 to build the best simulation platform in the industry and sell it to everyone.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Applied Intuition sells software subscriptions to automotive companies, autonomous vehicle developers, and defense organizations. Their core product is a simulation platform where customers can design, test, and validate autonomous driving systems in virtual environments.

They charge annual subscription fees based on usage and features. They also provide tooling for synthetic data generation, vehicle-in-the-loop testing, and ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems) validation.

Revenue has grown rapidly as automakers accelerate their AV and ADAS programs.

THE PRODUCTS

Applied Intuition's ADAS Toolchain covers the full development lifecycle for driver-assistance systems. Their Autonomous Vehicle simulation platform handles planning, perception, and full-stack testing.

Synthetic data generation creates training data for ML models. Vehicle-in-the-loop testing connects simulation to real hardware.

Their defense platform applies the same simulation technology to military autonomous systems.

HOW THEY GREW

Applied Intuition's strategy is to be the horizontal platform that everyone builds on. Rather than building their own autonomous vehicle (like Waymo or Cruise), they sell tools to everyone who is building one.

This is the classic pick-and-shovel strategy. They've expanded from pure AV simulation into ADAS validation, synthetic data generation, and even defense applications (simulation for autonomous military vehicles).

The $6 billion valuation reflects the breadth of their market.

THE HARD PART

The AV industry has been slower to commercialize than predicted, which affects demand for simulation tools. If fewer companies are building self-driving cars, the market shrinks.

Competition from internal simulation teams at well-resourced companies (Waymo, Tesla) and from other simulation providers (NVIDIA Omniverse, Cognata) is real. Applied Intuition also needs to keep pace with rapidly evolving AV technology — their simulation must be as good as reality, or test results are meaningless.

WHO BACKED THEM

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) led multiple rounds. Lux Capital, General Catalyst, Elad Gil, Addition, and Porsche Investments have also invested.

The a16z backing is significant — they're one of the most influential VC firms in enterprise software, and their conviction validated Applied Intuition's market position.
