Indonesia's e-commerce underdog. While Tokopedia merged with GoTo and Shopee burned billions, Bukalapak carved out a niche by digitizing the millions of tiny neighborhood shops (warungs) that sell everything from cigarettes to rice. The IPO in 2021 was the largest in Indonesian history — raising $1.5 billion. Then the stock dropped 80%. The story of Bukalapak is the story of Indonesian tech: massive opportunity, brutal competition, and the gap between IPO hype and reality.

Achmad Zaky was a computer science student at Bandung Institute of Technology who saw that Indonesian small businesses had no online presence. In 2010, he co-founded Bukalapak as an online marketplace for small merchants to sell products.
The name means "open a stall" in Indonesian. The early days were scrappy — Zaky personally helped merchants list products and handled customer support.
The company grew alongside Indonesia's smartphone adoption, riding the wave of 200+ million people coming online for the first time.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
E-commerce marketplace. Bukalapak connects buyers with sellers (both individuals and small businesses) and earns transaction fees.
Their differentiation is Mitra Bukalapak — a platform that digitizes warungs (neighborhood kiosks) by letting them sell digital products (phone top-ups, bill payments, financial services) through Bukalapak's system. Revenue comes from marketplace commissions, digital product sales, and financial services fees.
THE PRODUCTS
Bukalapak Marketplace — online marketplace for consumer goods. Mitra Bukalapak — digitization platform for warungs (neighborhood shops).
BukaReksa — mutual fund investment platform. BukaEmas — digital gold investment.
BukaPengadaan — B2B procurement marketplace for businesses.
HOW THEY GREW
Warung digitization. While Tokopedia and Shopee fought over online consumers, Bukalapak built Mitra — a product for the 70+ million warungs across Indonesia.
By digitizing these tiny shops, Bukalapak created a distribution network for digital products (airtime, data packages, bill payments) that generated steady revenue. It was a flanking strategy that avoided direct competition with Shopee.
THE HARD PART
Competition from Shopee (Sea Group), Tokopedia (GoTo), and Lazada (Alibaba) — all with deeper pockets. The 2021 IPO raised $1.5 billion but the stock dropped over 80% from its peak.
Achieving profitability while competing with subsidized competitors is the core challenge. Indonesian consumers are extremely price-sensitive.
