CASETEXT

Netfigo Verdict
on Casetext

Built AI legal research tools for a decade before anyone cared about AI. Then GPT happened and suddenly Casetext was the hottest legal tech company on Earth. Thomson Reuters bought them for $650 million in August 2023 — just months after they launched CoCounsel, the first AI legal assistant powered by GPT-4. The founders spent 10 years being too early. Then they were exactly on time. The $650 million exit proves that timing in AI is everything, and patience pays if you survive long enough.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Jake Heller was a litigation associate at a top law firm who realized legal research was absurdly inefficient. Lawyers were using tools built in the 1990s to search case law.

In 2013, he co-founded Casetext to build a better legal research platform using natural language processing. For years, the company was a solid but unspectacular legal tech startup competing with Westlaw and LexisNexis.

Then large language models arrived. In early 2023, Casetext launched CoCounsel — the first AI legal assistant powered by GPT-4.

It could draft legal briefs, analyze contracts, review documents, and do legal research in minutes instead of hours. The legal industry lost its mind.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

SaaS subscriptions for legal professionals. Law firms and legal departments pay monthly/annual fees for access to Casetext's legal research tools and AI assistant.

Pricing starts at a few hundred dollars per user per month. The AI features (CoCounsel) command premium pricing.

Thomson Reuters acquired the company for $650 million in 2023 to integrate into its Westlaw platform.

THE PRODUCTS

CoCounsel — GPT-4 powered AI legal assistant for brief drafting, contract review, and research. Casetext Legal Research — AI-enhanced case law search.

Parallel Search — finds relevant cases using plain language instead of Boolean queries.

HOW THEY GREW

Being first to market with GPT-4 legal AI. While competitors were still experimenting, Casetext launched CoCounsel as a production-ready product in January 2023.

The timing was perfect — legal professionals were fascinated by ChatGPT but needed a purpose-built tool. Casetext was already trusted in legal tech, so the AI product had instant credibility.

THE HARD PART

Competing with Thomson Reuters (Westlaw) and LexisNexis, which have massive market share and deep relationships with law firms. Before the AI pivot, Casetext was a small player in a duopoly market.

The acquisition by Thomson Reuters was partially defensive — buy the AI innovator before they become a real threat.
