COPY.AI

Netfigo Verdict
on Copy.ai

Copy.ai was one of the first companies to turn GPT-3 into a product regular people could use. Write a prompt, get marketing copy. Simple. They got 15 million users. Tiger Global and Sequoia invested. Then OpenAI released ChatGPT and did the same thing for free. Overnight, Copy.ai's core product became a commodity. The pivot to enterprise GTM workflows — using AI to automate sales prospecting and marketing — is smart but unproven. Copy.ai is the canary in the coal mine for every AI wrapper startup: what happens when the foundation model company gives away your product for free?

THE ORIGIN STORY

Chris Lu and Paul Yacoubian launched Copy.ai in 2020, initially as a simple tool for generating marketing headlines. They were among the first to commercialize GPT-3 for content generation.

The product went viral on Product Hunt and grew to 1 million users within months. They entered Y Combinator and raised from Tiger Global and Sequoia.

As ChatGPT and other AI writing tools flooded the market, Copy.ai pivoted toward enterprise go-to-market (GTM) workflows — helping sales teams draft outreach, qualify leads, and automate repetitive marketing tasks.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Copy.ai uses AI to generate marketing copy, blog posts, social media content, and sales emails. Users type a prompt, and the AI generates multiple versions of copy that they can edit and use.

Revenue comes from SaaS subscriptions — free tier (2,000 words/month), Pro ($49/month), and Enterprise plans. The company has over 15 million registered users and pivoted from pure copywriting to a broader "GTM AI platform" for sales and marketing workflows.

THE PRODUCTS

Copy.ai (AI copywriting), Copy.ai Workflows (GTM automation), Copy.ai Chat (enterprise AI assistant), Copy.ai API

HOW THEY GREW

Become the AI-powered go-to-market platform for enterprise sales and marketing teams. Instead of competing with ChatGPT on general writing, Copy.ai focuses on specific GTM workflows: prospecting, lead enrichment, email sequences, and content at scale.

The bet: enterprises will pay for AI tools embedded in their sales process, not just generic writing assistants.

THE HARD PART

Commoditization. When ChatGPT launched in late 2022, it could do everything Copy.ai did — for free.

Dozens of AI copywriting tools emerged. Copy.ai's moat evaporated overnight.

The company had to pivot from consumer AI writing (now a commodity) to enterprise AI workflows (higher value, more defensible). This pivot is still in progress.
