THE ORIGIN STORY

Isaac Bentwich was an Israeli physician and entrepreneur who'd previously built companies in genomics and personalized medicine. He looked at agriculture and saw the same problem he'd seen in medicine: treatment without diagnosis.

Farmers were irrigating and fertilizing without measuring what the soil actually needed. It was like prescribing medication without a blood test.

CropX started in Israel, a country that's been a global leader in agricultural technology since the 1960s (drip irrigation was invented there). The first sensors were designed to be cheap, wireless, and easy to install.

No wires. No drilling.

Push them into the soil, connect to the app, and start collecting data. The key technical innovation was making the sensors robust enough to survive underground for years while being cheap enough for widespread deployment.

The company expanded to the US through the acquisition of CropMetrics, a Nebraska-based soil-sensing company with an existing customer base in the Midwest corn belt. This gave CropX instant access to American farmers and local agronomic expertise.

The Israel plus US combination gave them both the technology edge and the market access.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Hardware plus SaaS. Farmers buy or lease CropX soil sensors (roughly $300-500 each) and install them in their fields.

The sensors transmit data wirelessly to the CropX cloud platform. The SaaS subscription ($2-5 per acre per year) provides real-time soil analytics, irrigation scheduling recommendations, variable rate application maps, and integration with existing farm management software.

The value proposition is simple math. A farmer spending $50,000/year on water can save $10,000-15,000 with CropX.

A farmer over-applying fertilizer at $200/acre can cut that by 15-20%. The sensors pay for themselves in one season.

CropX also generates revenue from agronomic consulting services and data partnerships with irrigation equipment manufacturers. The recurring SaaS revenue from analytics is the most attractive revenue stream.

THE PRODUCTS

CropX soil sensors measure moisture, temperature, salinity, and electrical conductivity at multiple depths. The sensors are wireless, solar-powered, and designed to last 5+ years in the field.

Installation takes minutes: push into the ground, pair with the app.

The CropX Agronomic Platform provides real-time soil maps, irrigation scheduling recommendations, variable rate application maps for fertilizer, and field-by-field analytics dashboards. The platform integrates with major irrigation systems (Valley, Reinke, Lindsay) and farm management software.

Alert systems notify farmers when soil conditions cross critical thresholds. The dashboard includes satellite imagery overlay, weather integration, and historical trend analysis.

CropX also offers consulting services through a network of certified agronomists who help farmers interpret data and implement recommendations.

HOW THEY GREW

Geographic expansion is the primary lever. CropX started in Israel and the US but agriculture is global.

They're expanding into Australia, Latin America, and Europe where water scarcity and fertilizer costs are driving demand for precision agriculture. Each new region requires local crop knowledge, local partnerships, and often local sensor calibration.

The platform play is the bigger vision. CropX wants to be the soil intelligence layer that sits underneath all farm management decisions.

Partner with irrigation companies (Netafim, Valley, Lindsay) to integrate CropX data directly into irrigation controllers. Partner with fertilizer companies to enable variable-rate application.

The more CropX data flows into other systems, the more indispensable it becomes. They're also exploring carbon credit measurement, using soil data to verify carbon sequestration for carbon offset markets.

THE HARD PART

Farmer adoption is slow. Farmers are among the most risk-averse business operators in the world, and for good reason: one bad decision can wipe out an entire year's income.

Convincing a 55-year-old corn farmer in Iowa to stick a sensor in his field and trust an app instead of his 30 years of experience is a hard sell. CropX has to prove ROI quickly and personally, often through local agronomists and dealers.

The other challenge is the data integration mess. Most farms use a patchwork of equipment from different manufacturers, each with its own software.

Getting CropX data to flow into and out of these proprietary systems requires constant integration work. The lack of a universal data standard in agriculture means CropX has to build and maintain dozens of integrations.

Finistere Ventures, one of the top agritech-focused VCs, has been a consistent backer. Innovation Endeavors (Eric Schmidt's venture fund) invested.

Germin8 Ventures and Harel Insurance Investments also participated. CropX also acquired several companies including CropMetrics (US soil sensing) and Tule Technologies (evapotranspiration measurement), using acquisition to expand both geographically and technically.

The investor base is smaller than consumer tech startups because agritech is a niche that requires patient, specialist capital.
