India's fantasy sports monopoly — 200 million users competing during every cricket match for prize money. Dream11 is India's most valuable gaming startup because it sits at the intersection of two things Indians love most: cricket and competition. During an IPL match, tens of millions of users are playing simultaneously. The TAM is absurd — 1.4 billion people in a cricket-obsessed nation with growing smartphone penetration. The risk: one regulatory decision classifying it as gambling could vaporize the business overnight. So far, the courts have sided with Dream11.

Harsh Jain loved fantasy sports but there was no good platform for cricket — the sport 1.4 billion Indians are obsessed with. He built Dream11 as a fantasy cricket platform where users draft teams of real players and earn points based on real match performance.
In a country where cricket is religion, Dream11 became the temple.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Platform fee on fantasy sports contests. Users pay entry fees to join contests, Dream11 takes a platform fee (10-15%), and distributes the remaining pool as prizes.
Also: advertising revenue, brand partnerships, and data licensing. Revenue exceeded $600 million in 2024.
THE PRODUCTS
Fantasy Cricket, Fantasy Football, Fantasy Basketball, Fantasy Kabaddi, Real-time contests during live matches, Mega contests (large prize pools), Head-to-head contests.
HOW THEY GREW
Expanding beyond cricket into every sport — football (soccer), basketball, kabaddi, and more. Also launching new gaming formats (rummy, poker, casual games) through acquisitions.
International expansion is limited because cricket fantasy only works in cricket-playing countries, but the addressable market in India alone is massive.
THE HARD PART
Regulatory risk. Fantasy sports exists in a legal gray zone in India — some states have banned it, classifying it as gambling.
Dream11 has won court cases establishing fantasy sports as a "game of skill" but the regulatory battle is ongoing. One unfavorable ruling could shut down the business in major states.
