FRAMER

Netfigo Verdict
on Framer

Framer was dying as a prototyping tool — Figma was eating its lunch. So Koen Bok did something most founders lack the courage to do: he threw out the entire product and rebuilt it as a website builder. The pivot was a Hail Mary that actually worked. New Framer sites load absurdly fast (static generation), look stunning by default, and can be built in a fraction of the time Webflow takes. They also launched AI-powered site generation before anyone else in the space. From near-death in 2021 to $350M+ valuation in 2024. Sometimes the best startup strategy is admitting your first idea stopped working and starting over.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Koen Bok and Jorn van Dijk founded Framer in Amsterdam in 2014 as a prototyping tool. The original product — Framer Classic — was loved by designers at companies like Google, Facebook, and Uber for creating interactive prototypes.

But prototyping tools are hard to monetize (Figma dominated the market) and Framer was struggling to grow. In 2022, they made a dramatic pivot: they rebuilt the entire product as a website builder.

The new Framer launched and immediately gained traction with designers who wanted to publish beautiful, fast websites without touching code. The pivot was one of the most successful product resets in SaaS history.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Framer started as a prototyping tool for designers and pivoted into a full website builder in 2022. The new Framer lets designers and marketers build production websites with a visual canvas — similar to Webflow but with a stronger emphasis on animation, interaction design, and performance.

Sites built in Framer are statically generated and load extremely fast. Pricing starts free, with plans at $5/month for personal sites and $15/month for professional.

The pivot from prototyping to website publishing was a bet-the-company move that paid off spectacularly.

THE PRODUCTS

Framer Sites (visual website builder), Framer AI (AI-powered website generation), Framer CMS (content management), Framer Motion (open-source animation library for React), Framer Templates (marketplace)

HOW THEY GREW

Design-first viral growth. Framer sites are beautiful by default — designers show them off on Twitter, Dribbble, and portfolio sites, generating organic word-of-mouth.

Framer also offers a template marketplace and AI-powered site generation. The combination of aesthetic quality and fast time-to-publish makes it the default choice for designers who want a personal site up in hours, not days.

THE HARD PART

Competing with Webflow and Squarespace in an increasingly crowded website builder market. Framer's advantage is speed and design quality, but Webflow has a larger ecosystem and Squarespace has mainstream brand awareness.

Framer also needs to expand beyond personal and portfolio sites into more complex use cases (e-commerce, multi-page marketing sites, team collaboration) to justify enterprise pricing.
