The Philippines' super app. GCash started as a simple mobile money service and became the country's most important financial app — 90+ million registered users in a country of 115 million. Send money, pay bills, buy groceries, invest in funds, get a loan, buy crypto — all through GCash. In a country where 70% of adults were unbanked five years ago, GCash became the bank. It's the M-Pesa of Southeast Asia, except bigger and with more features.

GCash launched in 2004 as a basic mobile money service by Globe Telecom, one of the Philippines' largest telcos. For years, it was a niche product for sending airtime credits and basic money transfers.
The transformation came in 2017 when Globe brought in new leadership and partnered with Ant Group (Alibaba's fintech arm) to rebuild GCash as a full digital wallet and financial super app. The COVID pandemic in 2020 was the catalyst — cash-dependent Filipinos suddenly needed digital payments.
GCash usage exploded from 20 million to 90+ million users in three years.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
GCash makes money from transaction fees (merchant payments, money transfers), financial services (lending, insurance, investment products), and e-commerce commissions. The platform processes billions of dollars in transactions monthly.
Revenue grows with transaction volume and financial product adoption. GCash also earns from GCredit (micro-lending) and GInvest (investment products).
THE PRODUCTS
GCash Wallet — digital wallet for payments, transfers, and bill payments. QR Payments — scan to pay at 3+ million merchants.
GCredit — instant micro-loans. GInvest — access to mutual funds and investment products.
GInsure — insurance products. GCash Savings — digital savings account.
HOW THEY GREW
COVID + telco distribution. Globe Telecom's 80+ million subscribers provided a built-in user base.
When COVID forced the Philippines into one of the world's longest lockdowns, digital payments became essential overnight. GCash was the only major mobile wallet ready for the moment.
Government cash aid was distributed through GCash, further driving adoption.
THE HARD PART
The Philippines is price-sensitive. Most GCash users transact small amounts — the average transaction is just a few dollars.
Monetizing 90 million users who each generate small revenue is the challenge. Competition from Maya (PayMaya, backed by Tencent) is real.
Regulatory requirements from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (central bank) add complexity.
