GREENLIGHT

Netfigo Verdict
on Greenlight

Greenlight gave kids debit cards and parents a way to teach them about money without handing over cash and hoping for the best. The app lets parents set spending controls, automate allowances, and see every purchase in real-time. Six million parents signed up. The company raised $573 million and hit a $2.3 billion valuation. Teaching kids about money turned out to be a very profitable business. Which is, ironically, the best financial lesson of all.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Tim Sheehan and Johnson Cook were both dads who realized that their kids had no concept of money because everything was digital. Allowance in cash was anachronistic.

Kids couldn't use cash at online stores. And handing a 10-year-old a credit card felt irresponsible.

In 2014, they founded Greenlight in Atlanta to build a debit card for kids that parents could manage through an app. The card would have parental controls: spending limits, store restrictions, and real-time notifications.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Greenlight charges families a monthly subscription fee starting at $4.99/month for the basic plan. Premium plans add features like investing, savings goals, and credit score monitoring for teens.

The company also earns interchange revenue from card transactions.

The LTV of a Greenlight customer is high because families join when kids are young and stay for years as children grow through different financial life stages.

THE PRODUCTS

The Greenlight debit card for kids with parental controls. The app lets parents set allowances, assign chores, set savings goals, and monitor spending in real-time.

Greenlight Invest lets kids buy fractional shares of stocks with parental approval. Greenlight Level Up teaches financial literacy through interactive challenges.

HOW THEY GREW

Word of mouth among parents was the primary growth channel. When one parent in a school group uses Greenlight, other parents see the chore/allowance features and sign up.

The viral loop is parent-to-parent.

Greenlight expanded from a simple debit card to a full family finance platform: savings accounts with interest, investing for kids, financial literacy education, and credit-building tools for teens.

THE HARD PART

Competition from banks. JPMorgan Chase launched Chase First Banking, a free kids' debit card, in 2020.

When the largest bank in America offers a free version of your core product, that is an existential threat.

Greenlight has to justify its subscription fee by offering features that free alternatives lack. The investing, education, and credit-building features are the differentiation.
