Klaviyo is the email and SMS marketing platform that powers basically every successful Shopify store. They send 150+ billion emails and messages per year. They IPO'd in 2023 at a $9.2 billion valuation. The insight was simple: e-commerce stores have incredible customer data but terrible tools to use it. Klaviyo built the tool that turns purchase data into personalized marketing that actually works. Shopify invested $100 million because they realized Klaviyo was making their merchants more money.

Andrew Bialecki and Ed Hallen were working at Applied Predictive Technologies (a data analytics firm) when they noticed that e-commerce companies were sitting on goldmines of customer data — purchase history, browsing behavior, cart abandonment, email engagement — but using primitive email tools (Mailchimp, Constant Contact) that couldn't leverage any of it. They founded Klaviyo in 2012 to build a marketing platform specifically designed for e-commerce, with deep data integration at its core.
The Shopify integration was the breakthrough: Klaviyo synced every customer data point from a Shopify store and used it to power automated, personalized email and SMS campaigns.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Klaviyo is a SaaS platform that charges based on the number of contacts in a customer's database. Plans start free (up to 250 contacts) and scale up from $20/month.
Revenue grows as customers grow their email lists. They also charge for SMS messages on a per-message basis.
The platform integrates natively with Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and other e-commerce platforms. Revenue exceeded $700 million in 2024, with strong net revenue retention (customers spend more over time as their businesses grow).
THE PRODUCTS
Klaviyo's core platform provides email marketing, SMS marketing, and push notifications, all powered by e-commerce data. Their Customer Data Platform aggregates data from e-commerce, POS, and custom sources.
Automated flows trigger messages based on customer behavior (cart abandonment, post-purchase, browse abandonment). Segmentation allows targeting based on hundreds of data points.
AI-powered predictive analytics forecast customer lifetime value, churn risk, and next purchase date.
HOW THEY GREW
Klaviyo's growth strategy was bottoms-up adoption through the Shopify ecosystem. Small Shopify stores adopted Klaviyo because it was clearly better than Mailchimp for e-commerce.
As those stores grew, they needed more features and paid more. Klaviyo also built an extensive partner ecosystem — agencies and consultants who recommended Klaviyo to their clients.
The Shopify strategic partnership (Shopify invested $100M and made Klaviyo a recommended app) was the ultimate distribution advantage. International expansion and the addition of SMS marketing broadened the addressable market.
THE HARD PART
Competition from Mailchimp (now part of Intuit), Omnisend, Drip, and other marketing platforms is constant. Shopify itself could build competing features.
The e-commerce market is cyclical — when consumer spending slows, merchants reduce marketing budgets. Klaviyo's valuation at IPO was aggressive, and the stock has fluctuated significantly.
Moving upmarket to serve larger enterprises requires different go-to-market capabilities than serving small Shopify stores.
