The company that lets engineers turn features on and off like a light switch — without deploying new code. LaunchDarkly makes feature flags, which sounds boring until you realize every major tech company on Earth uses them. Facebook, Google, Netflix, and 4,000+ other companies use LaunchDarkly to test features with specific users, gradually roll out changes, and instantly kill anything that breaks. Valued at $3 billion for a product most non-engineers have never heard of. The invisible infrastructure behind every software release you've ever experienced.

launchdarkly.comTHE ORIGIN STORY
Edith Harbaugh was a product manager who kept watching engineering teams struggle with releases. Shipping new code was terrifying — one bad feature could crash everything.
What if you could separate deploying code from releasing features? In 2014, she co-founded LaunchDarkly with John Kodumal to build feature management infrastructure.
Feature flags let engineers wrap new features in toggles that can be turned on/off independently of code deployment.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
SaaS subscriptions. Companies pay based on the number of developers using the platform and the volume of feature flag evaluations.
Pricing starts at $10/month for small teams and scales to six-figure enterprise contracts. The product is sticky — once feature flags are embedded in code, ripping them out is painful.
THE PRODUCTS
Feature Flags — toggle features on/off for specific users, segments, or percentages. Progressive Rollouts — gradually release features to increasing percentages of users.
Experimentation — A/B testing tied to feature flags. Feature Workflows — approval processes and scheduling for flag changes.
HOW THEY GREW
Developer-led adoption. Engineers at one team would start using LaunchDarkly, then it would spread across the organization.
The "land and expand" motion worked perfectly because feature flags solve a universal engineering pain point. Enterprise sales followed as CTOs realized their teams were already using it.
