LEGALZOOM

Netfigo Verdict
on LegalZoom

LegalZoom was co-founded by Robert Shapiro — yes, that Robert Shapiro, from the O.J. Simpson defense team. He helped build a platform that lets anyone form an LLC, file a trademark, or create a will without paying a lawyer $300/hour. The company went public in 2021 and now serves millions of small businesses. It’s the democratization of legal services, co-created by a man who knows exactly how expensive lawyers are.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Robert Shapiro (the celebrity lawyer), Brian Liu, Brian Lee, and Edward Hartman founded LegalZoom in 2001. The thesis was that most basic legal tasks — forming a company, filing a trademark, creating a will — don’t actually need a lawyer.

They need a platform that guides you through standardized forms and filings.

The company launched during the first dot-com era and survived the bust by being a real business with real revenue. They sold legal document preparation services at a fraction of what a law firm would charge.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Hybrid model: one-time fees for document preparation ($79-$299 for LLC formation, trademark filing, etc.) plus subscription services. The subscription model includes registered agent services, compliance alerts, tax advisory, and access to attorney consultations.

Revenue exceeded $660 million in 2023. The shift to subscriptions has been a strategic priority — recurring revenue from ongoing compliance services is more valuable than one-time filings.

THE PRODUCTS

LLC formation and business registration. Trademark filing and monitoring.

Estate planning (wills, trusts, power of attorney). Registered agent services (annual subscription).

Business compliance monitoring and alerts. Attorney access plans for on-demand legal advice.

HOW THEY GREW

LegalZoom grew through massive TV advertising — they spent hundreds of millions on television commercials targeting small business owners. The brand became synonymous with DIY legal services.

SEO for terms like "how to form an LLC" also drove millions of organic visitors.

THE HARD PART

Post-IPO stock performance has been rough — the stock is down significantly from its 2021 IPO price. Competition from free and low-cost alternatives (Stripe Atlas for company formation, state websites for direct filing) pressures pricing.

The subscription pivot needs to work for long-term sustainability.
