LUNAR

Netfigo Verdict
on Lunar

Lunar built the largest neobank in Scandinavia by convincing 600,000 Danes, Norwegians, and Swedes to switch from some of the world's most digitally advanced incumbent banks. That is a harder sell than convincing a UK customer to leave Barclays. Tencent invested. It has a full banking license. It is the pan-Nordic challenger bank and genuinely the most ambitious fintech story in that region.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Ken Villum Klausen was frustrated with Danish banking — expensive, slow, with interfaces designed in a different era. He launched Lunar in 2015 targeting Scandinavian millennials who wanted the clean mobile banking experience their UK and German peers were getting from Monzo, N26, and Revolut.

Lunar got its Danish banking license in 2019 (one of the first fully-licensed neobanks in the Nordic region), which was a significant milestone — it could now hold deposits without relying on partner bank infrastructure. It then expanded into Norway and Sweden, making it the largest pan-Scandinavian neobank.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Lunar earns revenue from interchange fees (a cut of every card transaction), subscription plans (Lunar One, Plus, Business), foreign exchange fees, and investment product management fees. Like most neobanks, it also earns interest on deposits held.

The paid subscription tiers (€9–€19/month) provide predictable revenue for premium features including international transfers, investment accounts, and higher cashback rates.

THE PRODUCTS

Lunar personal bank account (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish), Lunar investment account (stocks, ETFs), Lunar Business (SME banking), Lunar card (Visa)

HOW THEY GREW

Lunar acquired Evolve (a Danish savings app), launched investment products (stocks, ETFs, crypto), and built a business banking product alongside its consumer offering. The pan-Scandinavian expansion — building a single app that works across three countries with three currencies and three regulatory environments — was the core differentiator from single-market neobanks.

THE HARD PART

Scandinavian banking markets are small by global standards — Denmark, Norway, and Sweden combined have about 21 million people. The incumbent banks (Danske Bank, DNB, Nordea, Handelsbanken) are strong, well-capitalized, and digital-first in ways that many European banks are not.

Winning in Scandinavia means being meaningfully better than banks that are already pretty good digitally.
