MARVEL FUSION

Netfigo Verdict
on Marvel Fusion

Marvel Fusion is betting on the same physics breakthrough the National Ignition Facility demonstrated in December 2022 — laser-driven inertial confinement fusion — but with a twist that changes the commercial math. Their nanostructured fuel targets are engineered to absorb laser energy roughly 100 times more efficiently than conventional targets, which is the difference between an energy-losing experiment and a power plant. It is the most technically specific bet in the fusion startup field, and it is either exactly right or expensive to be wrong.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Founded in Munich in 2019 by Moritz von der Linden and Uwe Huber, who came from backgrounds in photonics and plasma physics. They saw the NIF's long-running laser fusion program producing incremental results and believed the problem wasn't the concept — it was the target design.

Their core insight was that nanostructured fuel targets could absorb laser energy far more efficiently than conventional solid pellets, potentially making laser ICF commercially viable rather than just a physics experiment. They anchored their US program at Colorado State University, partnering on the ALEPH laser system.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Currently R&D funded by private investors and strategic partners. Future model: selling electricity from commercial fusion power plants and licensing the nanostructured target manufacturing platform, which has potential applications in defense and other precision energy sectors.

THE PRODUCTS

Nanostructured fusion fuel target platform, ALEPH-based laser fusion research program at Colorado State University, planned MF-1 commercial demonstration reactor. The target manufacturing platform is the key differentiator — it is the IP that makes their approach distinct from every other laser fusion program.

HOW THEY GREW

Build credibility through academic partnerships at Colorado State University and the Technical University of Munich. Use the ALEPH laser at CSU to test target designs.

Secure industrial co-investment from players like Porsche SE who validate the commercial angle. The target manufacturing IP is the core asset — it can be licensed before a full plant is ever built.

THE HARD PART

Energy gain at system scale. Laser-driven fusion produces energy in nanosecond bursts.

The lasers themselves are massive consumers of electricity. Getting the net energy balance positive at a commercial power plant scale — accounting for laser efficiency, target cost, and repetition rate — requires enormous leaps from the current state of the art.

The NIF's December 2022 breakthrough was a physics milestone. It was not yet an engineering template for a power plant.
