MEILISEARCH

Netfigo Verdict
on Meilisearch

Meilisearch is the open-source search engine that developers actually enjoy setting up. While Elasticsearch is powerful but requires a team of specialists to run, and Algolia charges premium prices, Meilisearch is fast, simple, and free to self-host. It returns search results in under 50 milliseconds and handles typos, synonyms, and filtering out of the box. The French startup is proof that you can compete with well-funded incumbents by being radically simpler.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Thomas Payet, Clémentine Urquizar, and Quentin de Quelen were frustrated that adding good search to an application was either expensive (Algolia) or complex (Elasticsearch). They built Meilisearch in 2018 as an open-source alternative — a search engine that any developer could set up in minutes with no configuration.

Built in Rust for maximum performance, Meilisearch returns results in under 50 milliseconds with features like typo tolerance, faceted search, and geo-search built in by default.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Open-source core with cloud hosting monetization. The search engine is free to self-host.

Meilisearch Cloud (managed hosting) is the paid product, with pricing starting at $30/month. Revenue comes from developers and companies that want the convenience of managed hosting without operating the infrastructure themselves.

THE PRODUCTS

Meilisearch Engine (open-source search engine in Rust). Meilisearch Cloud (managed hosting).

Sub-50ms search responses. Typo tolerance (finds results even with spelling mistakes).

Faceted search and filtering. Geo-search.

Multi-language support. SDKs for 20+ languages and frameworks.

HOW THEY GREW

Open-source community growth. Meilisearch grew by being loved by developers on GitHub (40,000+ stars).

The open-source model creates massive awareness and adoption at zero cost. A percentage of users convert to the paid cloud product.

The company also created SDKs for every major programming language and framework.

THE HARD PART

Monetizing open source is hard. Most users self-host for free.

The company needs a large enough user base that the small percentage willing to pay for cloud hosting generates meaningful revenue. Competition from Algolia (well-funded, enterprise-focused) and Typesense (another open-source search engine).
