Mollie is what Stripe would look like if it had been built in Amsterdam for European small businesses. They have made online payments simple for 250,000+ merchants across Europe without requiring developers or complex integration work. They raised $665 million in 2021 at a $6.5 billion valuation. In a crowded payments market, they have won by obsessing over merchant experience rather than chasing enterprise contracts.

www.mollie.comTHE ORIGIN STORY
Adriaan Mol founded Mollie in 2004 during the earliest days of European e-commerce. He saw that small Dutch online shops had no good way to accept payments without dealing with bank bureaucracy.
He built a simple API and made it easy. The company grew slowly and deliberately for over a decade before the e-commerce boom made it rocket.
They bootstrapped for years before taking outside funding.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Transaction-fee based. Mollie charges merchants a percentage plus a flat fee per transaction, varying by payment method — iDEAL, credit card, SEPA, PayPal, and many others.
No monthly fees, no setup costs for smaller merchants. They also offer a Mollie Capital product providing revenue-based financing to their merchant base.
THE PRODUCTS
[ "Mollie Payments — accept 30+ payment methods across Europe via a single API integration", "Mollie Capital — revenue-based financing for merchants, funded against their Mollie transaction history", "Mollie Embed — white-label payment infrastructure for platforms and marketplaces" ]
HOW THEY GREW
SMB-first in the Netherlands, then expansion across Europe. They built local payment method support for every major European market — iDEAL in the Netherlands, Bancontact in Belgium, Sofort in Germany.
This localization is their biggest moat. Stripe and Adyen compete at the enterprise end.
Mollie owns the European small business segment.
THE HARD PART
Competing against Stripe (which has moved aggressively into Europe) and local banks offering payment solutions to their own business customers. Mollie must keep the product simple as they add financial services complexity — Mollie Capital, embedding, and platform payments all risk bloating what made them great.
