A $4 billion joint venture between Hyundai and Aptiv to build self-driving cars. Motional is the autonomous vehicle company that most people haven't heard of because it doesn't have a charismatic CEO tweeting about the future. What it has: 2+ million autonomous miles driven, a partnership with Uber for robotaxi rides in Las Vegas, and Hyundai's manufacturing might behind it. In a self-driving industry littered with failures (Argo AI, Cruise suspensions), Motional is quietly still standing.

Motional traces back to nuTonomy, a self-driving startup founded by MIT researchers in 2013. Aptiv (formerly Delphi Technologies) acquired nuTonomy in 2017 for $450 million.
In 2020, Aptiv and Hyundai formed Motional as a 50/50 joint venture, investing $4 billion to build Level 4 autonomous vehicles. The name "Motional" combined "motion" and "emotional" — the idea that mobility should be both efficient and safe.
The JV gave Motional both the software (from nuTonomy/Aptiv's years of autonomous driving R&D) and the hardware (Hyundai's vehicle manufacturing).
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Technology licensing and robotaxi operations. Motional develops autonomous driving technology (software, sensors, systems) and deploys it in commercial vehicles.
Revenue will come from robotaxi operations (rides sold to consumers via partners like Uber and Lyft) and technology licensing to automakers. The company currently operates driverless rides in Las Vegas through Uber.
THE PRODUCTS
IONIQ 5 Robotaxi — Hyundai IONIQ 5 configured for fully driverless operation. Uber Integration — driverless rides available through the Uber app in Las Vegas.
Autonomous Driving Software — the perception, planning, and control stack developed over 10+ years.
HOW THEY GREW
Automotive OEM backing. Having Hyundai as a 50% owner means Motional has access to vehicle manufacturing at scale — something standalone AV companies (like Argo AI, which died) couldn't match.
The Uber partnership for Las Vegas robotaxi rides gives them a commercial deployment to learn from.
THE HARD PART
Self-driving timelines keep slipping. The industry has spent $100 billion+ and still hasn't achieved mass-market autonomy.
Motional paused some commercial plans in 2024, signaling that the path to revenue is longer than expected. Waymo (Google) is far ahead in deployed robotaxi miles.
Regulatory uncertainty and public trust remain challenges.
