Netlify convinced millions of developers that the future of the web is serverless, static, and fast. They coined the term "Jamstack" and turned it into a movement. Every time a developer deploys a site without managing a server, Netlify wins. The company has become the default platform for modern web development — which is impressive for a tool most non-developers have never heard of.

Mathias Biilmann and Christian Bach were running a web agency in San Francisco when they realized that every client project involved the same pain: setting up servers, managing deployments, and dealing with infrastructure. In 2014, they built Netlify to automate all of that — a platform that deploys websites directly from Git repositories with automatic HTTPS, CDN distribution, and serverless functions.
The name is a portmanteau of "internet" and "simplify." Netlify popularized the Jamstack architecture (JavaScript, APIs, Markup) which decouples the frontend from the backend. What started as a deployment tool became the center of a developer movement.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Freemium SaaS. Free tier for personal projects and small sites.
Paid plans ($19-99/month per member) for teams that need collaboration, build minutes, and enterprise features. Enterprise contracts for large organizations.
Revenue comes from teams that start free and upgrade as they scale. Netlify also monetizes through serverless functions, form handling, and identity services.
THE PRODUCTS
Netlify Platform (deployment and hosting). Netlify Functions (serverless backend).
Netlify Forms (form handling without a server). Netlify Identity (authentication).
Netlify Edge (edge computing). Netlify Connect (data integration layer).
HOW THEY GREW
Developer-led, bottom-up adoption. Netlify grew by being the easiest way to deploy a website.
Developers tried it for personal projects, loved it, and brought it to work. The "Jamstack" branding created a community and conference ecosystem that turned a deployment tool into a philosophy.
Open-source integrations with Next.js, Gatsby, Hugo, and every major framework ensured Netlify was always the default recommendation.
THE HARD PART
Competition from Vercel, which has become the dominant platform for Next.js (the most popular React framework). Netlify and Vercel are in a direct war for the modern web development market, and Vercel has the advantage of building the framework that most developers use.
Netlify needs to prove it can win developers who are not already in the Jamstack camp.
