PATHAI

Netfigo Verdict
on PathAI

PathAI is teaching AI to look at tissue slides the way a pathologist does — except it never gets tired, never misses a pattern, and can analyze thousands of slides in the time a human looks at one. Pathology is the foundation of cancer diagnosis, and it has relied on humans staring through microscopes since the 1800s. PathAI is dragging it into the 21st century. If they get it right, cancer diagnosis becomes faster, more accurate, and more accessible to the billions of people who live nowhere near a specialist.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Andy Beck and Aditya Khosla met at the intersection of medicine and AI. Beck was a pathologist at Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center who understood that pathology was ripe for AI — the field depends on visual pattern recognition, which is exactly what deep learning excels at.

Khosla was an AI researcher at MIT. Together they founded PathAI in 2016 to build AI-powered pathology tools that could assist pathologists in diagnosing cancer and other diseases more accurately and efficiently.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

B2B SaaS and partnerships. PathAI works with pharmaceutical companies (using AI to analyze tissue samples in clinical trials), diagnostic labs (improving accuracy and efficiency), and biopharma (biomarker identification for drug development).

Revenue comes from enterprise contracts with pharma companies and health systems. Pharma partnerships are particularly lucrative — drug companies pay premium prices for AI analysis in clinical trials.

THE PRODUCTS

PathAI Platform (AI-powered pathology analysis). AISight (clinical research product for pharma).

PathExplore (biomarker discovery). Digital pathology slide scanning and management.

Cancer detection and grading algorithms.

HOW THEY GREW

Pharma partnerships as the primary growth engine. Rather than selling directly to individual pathologists, PathAI targeted large pharmaceutical companies that need to analyze millions of tissue samples in clinical trials.

These partnerships provide large contracts and validate the technology. The company then expanded into clinical diagnostics labs.

THE HARD PART

Regulatory hurdles for AI in diagnostics. Getting AI-powered diagnostic tools FDA-cleared is a long and expensive process.

Competition from Paige (pathology AI that has FDA clearance) and from large diagnostic companies adding AI features. The pathology profession is also culturally resistant to automation.
