Veterinarians are excellent at keeping animals alive and terrible at sending appointment reminders. PetDesk decided to fix the second part. They built the communication and practice management layer that sits between vet clinics and their clients — the software that makes sure you know Biscuit is due for his vaccines and that the clinic knows you're coming. Thousands of clinics across North America use their platform, and with Americans spending over $136 billion on pets annually, the market for software that makes vet practices run better is not going away.

Taylor Caplan founded PetDesk in San Diego in 2012 with a straightforward premise: veterinary practices have the same communication failures as every other small service business, but the stakes are higher. Pet owners are emotionally invested in their vet relationship in a way they are not invested in their dentist or their accountant.
A text reminder about a rabies booster isn't junk mail — it's something people actually act on. The early product was basic: automated appointment reminders sent to pet owners on behalf of clinics.
From there it expanded into two-way texting, online booking, digital wellness plans, and eventually full practice management.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
PetDesk charges veterinary practices a monthly subscription for its platform. The pricing scales with the size of the clinic and the features used.
Basic plans cover client communication — reminders, two-way texting, email campaigns. Higher tiers add online booking, digital health records, a branded pet owner app, and practice analytics.
Clinics pay because the software reduces no-show rates, increases preventive care visits, and cuts the administrative load on front desk staff. In a profession where staff retention is a genuine crisis, tools that reduce phone volume and repetitive scheduling tasks have real value.
THE PRODUCTS
The PetDesk Pet Owner App — a white-labeled mobile app that gives each clinic's clients a single place to book appointments, receive reminders, access pet health records, and message the clinic directly. Two-Way Texting — allows front desk staff to conduct full conversations with pet owners via text, reducing phone volume substantially.
Automated Reminders — the original product, which sends appointment and wellness reminders across text, email, and push notification channels. Shepherd Practice Management — a cloud-native practice management system acquired to serve clinics ready to replace their legacy software.
HOW THEY GREW
PetDesk grew by integrating with existing practice management software rather than replacing it. Most vet clinics already had legacy systems they were locked into — IDEXX Cornerstone, AVImark, others.
PetDesk plugged into those systems and added the modern communication layer on top. That approach lowered the barrier to adoption dramatically.
The second growth lever was acquisitions: buying Shepherd Veterinary Software added cloud-based practice management for clinics ready to switch systems entirely, and acquiring Vetstoria added international online booking capabilities. PetDesk went from communication add-on to full-stack vet practice platform in about three years of deal-making.
THE HARD PART
The veterinary practice software market is dominated by companies with deep roots — IDEXX, Covetrus, and Merck Animal Health all have decades-old relationships with clinic owners and bundled product offerings. PetDesk is competing on user experience and communication specifically, which is a real differentiator, but winning the full practice management contract requires trust that takes time to build.
The integration complexity is also real: every clinic has slightly different workflows and legacy setups, and making a multi-system platform work reliably across thousands of different configurations is the kind of operational challenge that doesn't get easier as you scale.

WHO BACKED THEM
OMERS Growth Equity led PetDesk's major growth financing round in 2022, providing the capital for the acquisition strategy that added Shepherd and Vetstoria to the platform. OMERS Growth Equity is the growth-stage arm of the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System, one of Canada's largest pension funds, and their investment signaled institutional confidence in the vertical SaaS opportunity in veterinary practice technology.
