POSTMAN

Netfigo Verdict
on Postman

The Chrome extension that accidentally became the world's most popular API development tool. Thirty million developers use Postman — making it one of the most widely adopted developer tools on Earth. The challenge is the classic developer tools problem: huge adoption, modest revenue. But APIs are the connective tissue of all modern software, and Postman owns the developer workflow. If they crack enterprise sales, the revenue will catch up to the adoption.

Founded

2014

HQ

San Francisco, CA

Total Raised

$433 million

Founder

Abhinav Asthana

Status

Private — valued at $5.6 billion (2021)

THE ORIGIN STORY

Abhinav Asthana was a developer in Bangalore frustrated by how painful it was to test and debug APIs. He built Postman as a simple Chrome extension to send API requests and inspect responses.

It was a side project. The Chrome extension went viral among developers — hitting millions of downloads organically with zero marketing spend.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Freemium SaaS. Free tier for individual developers.

Team plans at $14/user/month. Enterprise at custom pricing.

Revenue comes from team collaboration features, API monitoring, governance tools, and enterprise security. Over 30 million developers use the platform.

THE PRODUCTS

Postman API Client (test and debug APIs), Collections (save and organize API requests), Environments, Mock Servers, API Documentation, Monitors (automated API testing), Postman Flows, Workspaces (team collaboration).

HOW THEY GREW

API platform expansion. Postman is evolving from an API testing tool into a full API development platform — design, mock, test, document, monitor, and collaborate on APIs in one place.

Also building Postman Flows (visual API workflows) and AI-powered API testing. The bet: APIs are the building blocks of all modern software, and Postman will be where they're built.

THE HARD PART

Monetization. Postman has 30 million users but converting free developers into paying teams is hard.

Developers love free tools and resist paying. Postman has to build enough enterprise features — governance, security, collaboration — to justify corporate budgets without alienating the individual developers who made it popular.

WHO BACKED THEM

Insight Partners, Nexus Venture Partners, CRV, BOND, Coatue Management
