Reddit is the front page of the internet — a massive collection of communities where anonymous strangers argue about everything from stock picks to whether a hot dog is a sandwich. It took 19 years to go public, survived multiple near-death experiences, and somehow became one of the most valuable sources of human-written content in the age of AI. The ugly website that turned out to be the internet's most important knowledge base.

Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian founded Reddit in 2005 after being rejected from Y Combinator with a different idea. Paul Graham told them to build "the front page of the internet" instead.
The early site was barebones — just links and upvotes. It grew organically through nerd communities, then expanded into mainstream topics.
Condé Nast acquired Reddit in 2006 for approximately $10 million. Reddit became independent again in 2011.
Huffman returned as CEO in 2015 after interim CEO Ellen Pao resigned amid community backlash. The site grew slowly but steadily, reaching over 1.7 billion monthly visitors.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Reddit is a social news and discussion platform organized into thousands of topic-based communities called subreddits. Revenue comes from advertising (the primary source), Reddit Premium subscriptions ($6/month for ad-free experience), and data licensing (selling access to Reddit's massive archive of human-written content to AI companies).
The data licensing business became significant as companies like Google and OpenAI need high-quality training data for AI models.
THE PRODUCTS
Reddit (1.7B+ monthly visitors), Subreddits (community forums), Reddit Premium, Reddit Awards, Data licensing (AI training data), Reddit Talk (audio), Reddit Chat
HOW THEY GREW
Grow the advertising business by improving ad targeting and attracting more brand advertisers. Expand data licensing revenue as AI companies need more training data.
International growth (Reddit is still heavily US-focused). Improve the mobile app experience and attract younger users.
Continue building Reddit's reputation as the internet's most authentic source of human opinions (Google now surfaces Reddit results prominently).
THE HARD PART
Monetization. Reddit had massive traffic for years but struggled to turn it into revenue because the community hated advertising and the anonymous user base was harder to target than Facebook or Instagram users.
Content moderation is the other big challenge — Reddit's open structure means toxic subreddits emerge constantly. The 2023 API pricing controversy (which killed popular third-party apps) also damaged community trust.
