The fintech that took on Western Union's $7 billion remittance monopoly and is winning. Remitly now handles $40+ billion in annual send volume across 170 countries. Revenue is approaching $1 billion. The stock has tripled from its 2022 lows. Immigrants sending money home is one of the most underserved financial use cases in the world — $700 billion flows annually. Remitly is still under 10% market share. The runway is enormous.

Matt Oppenheimer was living in Kenya working at Barclays when he realized how broken international money transfers were. Immigrants sending money home to families were paying 8-10% in fees through Western Union and MoneyGram.
He built Remitly to undercut them — offering faster, cheaper, mobile-first international transfers. The first corridor was US-to-Philippines.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Transaction fees and FX margins. Customers pay a small fee ($0-4.99) per transfer plus Remitly takes a margin on the currency exchange.
Revenue exceeds $900 million annually. Higher-value transfers to more corridors drives growth.
THE PRODUCTS
International Money Transfers, Express Transfer (instant delivery), Economy Transfer (lower fee), Mobile app, Passbook (savings accounts for immigrants).
HOW THEY GREW
Corridor expansion and moving upmarket. Remitly started with a few remittance corridors and now operates in 170+ countries.
They acquired Passbook (immigrant banking) to offer savings accounts, and they're expanding into broader financial services for immigrants — not just remittances but banking, credit, and insurance.
THE HARD PART
Western Union and MoneyGram have massive distribution networks — physical locations in every village and town worldwide. Remitly has to build digital adoption in communities that rely on cash pickup points.
Also: compliance complexity in 170+ countries with different regulations, plus fraud prevention on cross-border transactions.
WHO BACKED THEM
PayU, Stripes Group, Generation Investment Management, Jeff Bezos, DN Capital
