Anurag Goel was an early Stripe engineer who experienced firsthand how Heroku had become the default deployment platform for startups — and how it had stagnated. He started building Render in 2018 as the Heroku replacement: same simplicity (GitHub deploy, zero config), but with modern infrastructure (native Docker, persistent disks, private networking) that Heroku had never built.
Render launched in 2019 with a simple pitch: everything Heroku should have become after Salesforce acquired it. It found immediate product-market fit among developers who needed simple deployments without the AWS complexity tax.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Render charges usage-based pricing for cloud services: web service hosting, static sites, databases (Postgres), Redis, cron jobs, and background workers. Free tier is available for static sites.
Paid plans start at $7/month for web services. Revenue scales with compute and storage consumption across its customer base.

HOW THEY GREW
Render grew entirely through developer word-of-mouth — blog posts, tutorials, and Twitter/X recommendations from developers who had migrated from Heroku. It launched official Heroku migration guides when Heroku killed its free tier in November 2022, capturing a large wave of developers looking for a free-tier replacement.
The free tier (always-free static sites, generous free hours for backend) was a deliberate strategy to acquire developers at zero cost who eventually convert to paid plans.
THE HARD PART
The Heroku replacement market is crowded. Fly.io, Railway, and Render are all competing for the same developer segment with similar propositions.
The differentiation is subtle: Render is positioned as the simplest full-stack platform (covers all the backend services a typical web app needs in one place), Railway is most loved for its UI, Fly.io is best for edge performance. Winning requires strong developer community advocacy and technical content.
