SENDLE

Netfigo Verdict
on Sendle

Sendle solved a straightforward problem: small businesses pay retail shipping rates because they lack the volume to negotiate. Sendle aggregates thousands of small shippers, negotiates volume rates, and passes the savings through. It is now in Australia, the US, and Canada, embedded into Shopify and Etsy checkouts. Simple business. Good execution. Exactly the kind of company that makes a lot of sense once you hear it.

THE ORIGIN STORY

James Chin Moody and Sean Geoghegan watched Australian small businesses paying retail shipping rates that were 2-3x what large retailers paid. The problem: Australia Post and DHL offer volume discounts, but a small Etsy seller shipping 20 parcels a week cannot negotiate.

Sendle aggregated thousands of small shippers into a large volume block and negotiated rates that made those small businesses competitive. The model was simple, the technology was straightforward, and it filled an obvious gap.

It launched in 2014 and expanded to the US in 2019.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Sendle charges small businesses a per-parcel rate for shipping — significantly cheaper than Australia Post's published rates because Sendle negotiates volume discounts from carriers and passes savings to small businesses that would individually lack the volume to negotiate. It works with existing carriers (DHL, Australia Post for some routes) and charges no monthly fees.

Revenue is the margin between what it charges the shipper and what it pays the carrier.

THE PRODUCTS

Sendle parcel shipping (small business rates), Sendle integrations (Shopify, Etsy, eBay, WooCommerce), Sendle API for e-commerce platforms

HOW THEY GREW

Sendle expanded to the US in 2019 targeting Etsy sellers, small e-commerce businesses, and entrepreneurs who needed simple, affordable shipping. It became an integrated shipping option within Shopify and Etsy storefronts — embedded access to the seller workflow is the key distribution mechanism for SMB shipping tools.

THE HARD PART

The parcel shipping market has thin margins and the incumbents (Australia Post, FedEx, UPS) have enormous scale advantages. Sendle competes on price and simplicity for the SMB segment, but any increase in carrier costs directly compresses margins.

The US expansion required building a carrier network in a market dominated by established players. NRMA (the Australian insurance and motoring association) was a strategic investor, providing capital and business network access.
