SKYDIO

Netfigo Verdict
on Skydio

Three MIT robotics PhDs built a drone that can fly itself through a forest without hitting a tree. Then they realized consumers would not pay $2,500 for it. So they pivoted to the US military, which will pay a lot more than $2,500 for an autonomous drone made in America. As the US government bans Chinese drones (DJI) from government use, Skydio is the only American manufacturer with autonomous AI flight capability. Andreessen Horowitz invested. The DoD invested. At $2.2 billion valuation, Skydio is the most important drone company in America. The irony: the company that started trying to film your skateboarding ended up filming military targets.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Adam Bry and Abraham Bachrach were MIT robotics researchers who built autonomous flying robots in MIT's CSAIL lab. They founded Skydio in 2014 to bring autonomous flight to the real world.

The first product (Skydio R1) was a consumer drone that could follow and film you while avoiding trees and obstacles — impressive tech but too expensive ($2,500) for consumers. Skydio pivoted to enterprise and defense, where autonomy and American-made hardware have enormous value.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Skydio builds autonomous drones that can fly themselves using AI — no pilot required. The drones use computer vision and deep learning to navigate environments, avoid obstacles, and execute complex inspection missions autonomously.

Revenue comes from selling drones and software to the US military, government agencies, utilities, and enterprise customers. Skydio is the leading American drone manufacturer, positioned as the domestic alternative to Chinese drone giant DJI.

THE PRODUCTS

Skydio X10 (enterprise/defense drone), Skydio Autonomy Enterprise (AI flight software), Skydio 3D Scan (automated inspection), Skydio Remote Compliance (FAA-compliant remote operations)

HOW THEY GREW

Own the US drone market by being the only American-made autonomous drone. As US government bans on Chinese drones expand (DJI was placed on the Commerce Department's entity list), Skydio is positioned to capture the replacement demand.

The strategy: win government contracts, expand to utilities and infrastructure inspection, and eventually bring autonomous capabilities to commercial markets globally.

THE HARD PART

Competing with DJI. The Chinese drone giant dominates the global market with cheaper, mature products.

Skydio's advantage is autonomy (DJI drones require manual piloting) and being American-made (US government agencies cannot use Chinese drones for security reasons). But DJI's scale gives it a massive cost advantage.

Skydio needs government and enterprise contracts to sustain operations until it can compete on price.
