Spotter figured out that YouTube creators were sitting on a gold mine — their back catalog — and nobody was financing it. The model is clean: Spotter pays creators a lump sum upfront for a license to monetize their old videos for a set period, then returns those rights when the term ends. MrBeast, Dude Perfect, and Rhett and Link have all taken Spotter money. It raised over $310M in VC funding and hit a $1.7 billion valuation in 2022 on the back of a $200M Series C led by SoftBank Vision Fund.

Aaron DeBevoise spent years in digital media, including as CEO of Machinima, one of the original YouTube multi-channel networks. He watched top creators generate millions of views on old videos while sitting cash-poor because YouTube ad payments are slow and inconsistent.
Spotter launched in 2019 to solve that problem — providing upfront capital without requiring creators to give up their channel, future content, or equity.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Spotter licenses the monetization rights to a creator's existing YouTube video catalog for a fixed term, typically three to five years. The creator receives a lump-sum payment upfront.
Spotter collects the ad revenue from those licensed videos during the term. At the end of the license period, all rights revert to the creator.
Spotter earns a profit if total ad revenue from the catalog exceeds the advance paid.
THE PRODUCTS
Catalog licensing advances for YouTube creators. Spotter Studio — a content ideation, research, and production intelligence tool.
Creator analytics and performance benchmarking.
HOW THEY GREW
Target the top tier of YouTube creators where catalog value is largest and most predictable. Use high-profile signings as social proof to attract more creators.
Expand into production tools, analytics, and creator intelligence products to become an end-to-end platform for professional YouTubers.
THE HARD PART
YouTube ad revenue is volatile — CPM rates swing with the broader advertising market. If CPMs drop significantly over a multi-year license term, the economics of individual deals compress.
Spotter also faces growing competition from other creator finance platforms and YouTube's own monetization improvements.
