WYSA

Netfigo Verdict
on Wysa

Jo Aggarwal built Wysa in 2015 after her own experience with depression — and it shows, in the best way. The AI mental health chatbot features a penguin, uses CBT and DBT, and has 5+ million users in 95 countries. The FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for adolescent depression in 2022 was earned through clinical validation, not lobbying. The NHS partnership in the UK is the kind of institutional credibility most health tech startups spend a decade chasing. And doing all of this on 0.5M — while Woebot raised 24M and Spring Health raised 70M+ — is either a sign of capital efficiency or a constraint the company has not fully escaped yet. Probably both.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Jo Aggarwal co-founded Wysa in 2015 after falling into a deep depression and finding that existing mental health tools were not meeting people where they were: on their phone, at 2am, not ready to talk to a person but needing something. She and co-founder Ramakant Vempati built Wysa as an always-available AI companion using evidence-based techniques — CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and ACT.

The product launched with a freemium consumer model and a deliberately non-threatening design: a small penguin character that would not feel clinical or judgmental. They built a user base in India, the UK, and the US simultaneously, then layered in B2B partnerships with NHS trusts, employers, and universities as the primary revenue driver.

The Series A in 2021 validated the institutional model.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Hybrid B2C and B2B. The consumer app is free with premium subscription tiers (self-serve).

The institutional arm — the primary revenue driver — licenses Wysa to NHS trusts, insurance companies, employers, and universities. B2B clients receive Wysa as a white-label or co-branded mental health benefit integrated into their existing platforms or apps.

The company operates across three markets: UK (NHS and employer sales), US (health system and employer sales), and India (consumer and corporate wellness). Multi-market operation on modest funding has required sharp prioritization.

THE PRODUCTS

Wysa — core AI chatbot delivering CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and ACT via conversational AI with the penguin character. Available in 65+ languages across iOS and Android.

Wysa for Work — enterprise employee mental health benefit platform, sold to employers as a standalone or integrated benefit. Wysa for Youth — adapted version for adolescents, with FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for adolescent depression.

Wysa Clinical — white-label platform for NHS trusts and health systems, integrating into clinical pathways as a between-session support and monitoring tool. Wysa for Teens specifically developed in partnership with NHS for deployment in UK secondary schools.

HOW THEY GREW

Clinical validation and regulatory credibility drive institutional sales. The 2022 FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for adolescent depression was a major unlock for US health system conversations.

NHS partnerships in the UK — including trust-level deployments — provide European and Commonwealth market credibility. The 0M Series B in July 2022, led by India-focused health tech VC HealthQuad and British International Investment (BII), gave Wysa investors with relationships in both South Asian and UK/European markets.

Multi-language support across 65+ languages is a genuine differentiator in emerging markets where competitors do not localize deeply. The company's India origin and cost structure allow it to compete on price in markets where 24M-funded Woebot cannot.

THE HARD PART

The AI mental health market has become crowded and the quality bar is poorly enforced by buyers. Wysa's clinical validation is real but not always the deciding factor in procurement decisions.

Operating across UK, US, and India simultaneously on 0.5M requires three regulatory compliance tracks, three sales teams, and three go-to-market strategies — capital-intensive for a company at this funding level. NHS procurement is prestigious but notoriously slow and the payment terms are brutal for cash flow.

The consumer-to-enterprise transition is never clean: consumer user metrics do not translate directly into enterprise contract conversations.
