BHAVISH AGGARWAL

Founded Ola, India's answer to Uber, then pivoted to electric vehicles with Ola Electric — one of the most ambitious bets in Indian tech.

Netfigo Verdict
on Bhavish Aggarwal

Bhavish Aggarwal built Ola into India's largest ride-hailing company, raised billions, then decided that was not ambitious enough and pivoted to manufacturing electric scooters. Ola Electric's gigafactory in Tamil Nadu is one of the largest scooter factories in the world. He also launched Krutrim, an AI company, making him the first Indian founder to achieve unicorn status in AI. The man does not do small. Whether all three bets pay off simultaneously is another question entirely.

CAREER & BACKGROUND

Born in 1985 in Ludhiana, Punjab. Studied computer science at IIT Bombay — India's most prestigious engineering school.

Worked briefly at Microsoft Research before co-founding Ola (originally ANI Technologies) in 2010. The idea came from a bad cab experience on a trip from Bangalore to Bandipur.

Ola grew to become India's dominant ride-hailing platform, operating in 250+ cities and at one point handling 2 million rides daily. The company raised over $3 billion from investors including SoftBank, Tiger Global, and Tencent.

But the ride-hailing business never became consistently profitable in India.

In 2020, Aggarwal made a dramatic pivot: he launched Ola Electric to manufacture electric scooters. The company built a massive factory in Tamil Nadu capable of producing 2 million scooters annually.

Ola Electric went public on the BSE in August 2024. In 2024, he also founded Krutrim, an AI company that became India's first AI unicorn within months of launching.

COMPANIES & ROLES

Founder and CEO of Ola (2010). Founder of Ola Electric (2020, IPO'd 2024).

Founder of Krutrim AI (2023, India's first AI unicorn). IIT Bombay alumnus.

Previously at Microsoft Research. Ola raised $3B+ from SoftBank, Tiger Global, and Tencent.

INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

Aggressive, mission-driven builder. Aggarwal bets big on massive markets — ride-hailing, electric vehicles, artificial intelligence.

He is not a diversified investor but a concentrated founder who goes all-in on each venture. His approach mirrors SoftBank's Masayoshi Son: think big, raise big, build big.

THE PLAYBOOK

Risk Approach

Extremely high. The man is simultaneously running three companies across three different industries.

He built one of the world's largest scooter factories from scratch. He launched an AI company and got it to unicorn status in months.

The risk tolerance is not just high — it is structural.

Money Habits

Lives in Bangalore. Known for being intense and demanding as a founder — employees describe a fast-paced, high-pressure culture at all his companies.

Has been publicly critical of legacy automakers and traditional Indian business practices.

BIGGEST WIN

Ola Electric's IPO in 2024. Taking a company from zero to public offering in four years, with a massive factory producing millions of scooters, was a remarkable achievement.

The IPO valued Ola Electric at over $4 billion and validated the EV thesis in India.

BIGGEST MISTAKE

Ola's ride-hailing profitability struggles. Despite raising $3 billion, Ola's ride-hailing business has never been consistently profitable.

Competition with Uber India, regulatory challenges, and the economics of the Indian market have made profitability elusive. The pivot to EVs was partly driven by the realization that ride-hailing alone would not produce the returns investors needed.

FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY

India's problems require India-scale solutions. Aggarwal has said he builds companies to solve problems that affect hundreds of millions of people — transportation, clean energy, AI access.

He believes Indian founders should build world-class companies, not just Indian copies of Western ones.

FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

Married. Lives in Bangalore.

From a Punjabi business family in Ludhiana. His parents supported his decision to leave Microsoft for entrepreneurship.

Has two children.

EDUCATION

IIT Bombay (BTech in Computer Science). IIT Bombay is India's MIT — the most competitive engineering school in a country of 1.4 billion people.

His CS background informs his technology-first approach to all businesses.

QUOTES (5)

I built Ola because I had a terrible cab ride. The best companies come from personal frustration.

We built one of the world's largest scooter factories in 18 months. Everyone said it was impossible. We just did it faster.

I'm simultaneously running a ride-hailing company, an EV manufacturer, and an AI company. Sleep is optional.

India's first AI unicorn in under a year. The world underestimates what Indian engineers can build.

India doesn't need copies of Western companies. It needs Indian solutions built for Indian scale.
