OSCAR DE LA HOYA
Winning world titles in six weight classes — then building Golden Boy Promotions and losing Canelo in boxing's costliest business divorce
Oscar De La Hoya won Olympic gold, became world champion in six weight classes, built Golden Boy Promotions into boxing's dominant platform — then lost Canelo Álvarez in a $365M contract dispute to a competitor. In boxing, the fighter is always the product. Whoever controls the product controls the money. De La Hoya built the greatest promotional machine in the sport and then learned this lesson the most expensive way possible.

CAREER & BACKGROUND
Oscar De La Hoya won Olympic gold at the 1992 Barcelona Games and world titles in six weight classes — from lightweight through super middleweight. He was boxing's highest-paid athlete for most of the late 1990s and 2000s.
He founded Golden Boy Promotions in 2002, building it into one of the two dominant US boxing promotional companies. At its peak, Golden Boy had Canelo Álvarez — the most commercially valuable active fighter — on contract.
In 2018, Álvarez left in a bitter dispute and signed a $365M deal with DAZN. Golden Boy lost its crown jewel overnight.
De La Hoya rebuilt with Ryan García and other prospects. He has also invested in cannabis, media, and real estate, and founded the De La Hoya Foundation for education in underserved communities.

INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
Media, sports rights, and fighter development. Golden Boy's model is retaining equity in broadcast deals, PPV revenue, and fighter development — building long-term promotional infrastructure rather than taking single-event fees.

BIGGEST WIN
The Golden Boy-Canelo era. The most commercially successful period in Golden Boy's history produced some of boxing's biggest PPV events and established the promotional company as the sport's dominant force.
BIGGEST MISTAKE
Losing Canelo Álvarez to DAZN's $365M deal in 2018. The fighter Golden Boy had developed into the sport's biggest star left for a competitor.
It is one of the most expensive promoter-fighter divorces in sports history and cost Golden Boy its dominant position.
FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY
In boxing, the promoter needs the fighter more than the fighter needs the promoter. Build relationships that feel like genuine partnerships — contracts that feel one-sided always end in lawsuits, and the promoter always loses.
FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

QUOTES (5)
I fought to be the best in six weight classes. I fight to be the best promoter the sport has ever seen. The ring teaches you that the only thing that matters is showing up better prepared than the other person.
Losing Canelo hurt. It was the right business decision for him and the wrong outcome for us. I respect it. I had to learn from it and rebuild.
East LA made me tough. It also made me grateful. I grew up fighting for everything. I want kids from East LA to know that coming from nothing is not a limitation — it is a fuel source.
The promoter's job is to make the fighter look like the biggest star in the world. When you do that job well, everyone makes money. When you forget whose name is on the marquee, you lose the fighter.
I was open about my struggles because I know someone out there is going through the same thing and thinking they are alone. No recovery is linear. No success story is clean.
