TOBIAS LÜTKE
Co-founder and CEO of Shopify, democratized e-commerce for millions of small businesses
Tobias Lütke wanted to sell snowboards online, could not find a good e-commerce platform, so he built one himself. That side project became Shopify — a $100 billion company powering millions of online stores and responsible for 10% of all US e-commerce. A German programmer who moved to Canada for love and accidentally built the most important tool in the history of small business.

CAREER & BACKGROUND
Tobias Lütke (Tobi) was a German programmer who moved to Ottawa, Canada in 2002 for his now-wife. He wanted to start an online snowboard shop but found that existing e-commerce platforms (Yahoo Stores, etc.) were terrible.
So he built his own using Ruby on Rails. The snowboard store launched in 2004 as Snowdevil, but other merchants kept asking if they could use his store software.
In 2006, Lütke launched Shopify as a product. It grew slowly at first, then exploded as the e-commerce revolution accelerated.
Shopify went public in 2015 and became one of the most valuable companies in Canada. Today, Shopify powers over 4 million online stores and processed over $235 billion in gross merchandise value in 2023.
Lütke has been CEO for nearly two decades, making him one of the longest-tenured tech founder-CEOs.
COMPANIES & ROLES
Shopify (co-founder and CEO, $100B+ market cap), Snowdevil (original snowboard store that inspired Shopify)
INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
Lütke's wealth is primarily Shopify stock. His strategic "investing" is through Shopify's product development — he personally drives product decisions and still codes.
His personal investment activity is limited but he has a known interest in gaming, open source, and developer tools. He thinks like a developer, not a financier — his decisions are driven by "what do merchants need?" not "what will the market reward?"
THE PLAYBOOK
Risk Approach
Moderate to high. Lütke has made bold bets at Shopify — spending heavily to build Shopify Fulfillment Network (which was later scaled back), acquiring Deliverr for $2.1 billion, and pivoting to AI-first development.
The 2022 tech downturn hit Shopify hard — the stock dropped 75% and Lütke had to lay off 20% of the company. He took personal responsibility, saying he had been "wrong" about the e-commerce acceleration lasting.
Money Habits
Lütke lives in Ottawa, far from Silicon Valley, and is known for being down-to-earth. He plays video games (StarCraft, factorio), reads science fiction, and talks openly about being an introvert running a massive company.
He is not associated with billionaire excess.
BIGGEST WIN
Shopify. Building a platform that powers 10% of US e-commerce from a snowboard shop side project.
Shopify democratized online selling — before Shopify, starting an online store required a developer. After Shopify, anyone with a product could sell online in minutes.
The company is worth over $100 billion.
BIGGEST MISTAKE
Over-investing in logistics. Lütke spent billions building the Shopify Fulfillment Network and acquiring Deliverr, then reversed course in 2023, selling the logistics business to Flexport.
He publicly admitted the logistics bet was wrong — it distracted from Shopify's core software mission. The 2022 layoffs (20% of staff) were also painful, and Lütke took personal blame.
FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY
Build the tool you wish existed. Lütke believes the best products come from solving your own problem first.
Shopify exists because he needed it. He also believes in long-term thinking — he has said he is building Shopify to last 100 years, not to maximize next quarter's earnings.
FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE
Married to Fiona McKean (they met in Canada). Children.
Based in Ottawa, Canada. Born in Koblenz, Germany.
EDUCATION
No university degree. Self-taught programmer.
Apprenticed as a computer programmer in Germany before moving to Canada.

QUOTES (6)
I built Shopify because I wanted to sell snowboards and every e-commerce platform was terrible. Solve your own problem first.
I have no university degree. I learned to code in Germany as an apprentice. The best education is building things.
We sold the logistics business to Flexport because I realized we were losing focus. A company that does everything does nothing well.
I laid off 20% of the company because I was wrong about the e-commerce acceleration lasting. I take full responsibility.
Shopify powers 10% of US e-commerce. Every time you buy something from a small brand online, there is a good chance we are behind it.
I still code. The day a CEO stops understanding the product is the day the product starts dying.
