BRIAN CHESKY

Co-founder and CEO of Airbnb

Netfigo Verdict
on Brian Chesky

Brian Chesky could not pay rent in San Francisco, so he put an air mattress on the floor and charged strangers to sleep on it. That absurd idea became Airbnb — a $100 billion company that has more listings than the top five hotel chains combined. He sold cereal boxes of Obama O's to fund the startup, got rejected by every investor in Silicon Valley, and somehow convinced the world that sleeping in a stranger's house is not only okay but actually better than a hotel.

CAREER & BACKGROUND

Brian Chesky co-founded Airbnb in 2008 with Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk. The origin story is legendary: Chesky and Gebbia could not afford rent in San Francisco, so they bought air mattresses and rented them out to conference attendees as "Air Bed and Breakfast." They sold branded cereal boxes (Obama O's and Cap'n McCains) during the 2008 election to fund the company.

Y Combinator accepted them in 2009 (Paul Graham later said he funded them because "if they can convince strangers to sleep in their apartment, they can convince anyone of anything"). Airbnb grew to become the world's largest accommodation platform — over 7 million listings in 220+ countries.

The company went public in December 2020 at a $47 billion valuation and doubled on day one. Chesky became the sole CEO and has run the company with a design-driven philosophy ever since.

COMPANIES & ROLES

INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

Chesky is not a traditional investor — his wealth is almost entirely Airbnb stock. His "investing" is through Airbnb's product and strategy decisions.

He approaches business as a designer, not a financier: he cares about the user experience, the emotional response, and the story. His strategic bets have been bold — surviving COVID (which nearly killed Airbnb), pivoting to long-term stays, and recently launching Airbnb Experiences and Icons.

THE PLAYBOOK

Risk Approach

Extremely high. Chesky bet everything on an idea that every investor initially rejected.

During COVID, Airbnb's revenue dropped 80% in eight weeks — Chesky had to lay off 25% of the company, cut $800 million in costs, and raise $2 billion in emergency debt. He bet the company would survive and come back stronger.

It did — Airbnb went public six months later.

Money Habits

Chesky lives well but is known for being a hands-on, obsessive CEO rather than a flashy billionaire. He has talked about still reviewing Airbnb product designs personally.

He has donated to various causes but is not yet a mega-philanthropist. His lifestyle is centered around the company and travel.

BIGGEST WIN

Airbnb. From air mattresses to a $100 billion company.

The COVID near-death experience makes it even more impressive — Chesky navigated from 80% revenue decline to a successful IPO in less than a year. Airbnb now has more listings than Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Wyndham, and Hyatt combined.

BIGGEST MISTAKE

Airbnb has faced significant regulatory battles worldwide — cities like New York, Barcelona, and Paris have cracked down on short-term rentals, arguing they drive up housing costs. The party problem — guests throwing destructive parties in hosts' homes — has been a persistent brand issue.

Chesky has also been criticized for Airbnb's impact on housing affordability in tourist-heavy cities.

FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY

Design the experience, not the product. Chesky believes that the best companies do not just solve a problem — they create an experience that people tell their friends about.

Every Airbnb feature is designed to create a story, not just a transaction.

FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

Single. Based in San Francisco.

Trained as an industrial designer at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design). Known for his intense work ethic and design obsession.

EDUCATION

Rhode Island School of Design (BFA in Industrial Design).

QUOTES (6)

Three air mattresses on the floor. That was the entire business plan. Every VC in Silicon Valley said no.

We have more rooms than Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, and Wyndham combined. And we do not own a single one. That is the power of a platform.

COVID took 80% of our revenue in eight weeks. I thought we were dead. Six months later we went public. The lesson: do not count out companies that people love.

We sold cereal boxes to fund Airbnb. Obama O's and Cap'n McCains. We made $30,000. If you are not willing to look stupid, you are not willing to succeed.

Every great product tells a story. Airbnb is not about a place to sleep. It is about belonging somewhere.

Paul Graham funded us because he said: if you can convince strangers to sleep in your apartment, you can convince anyone of anything.
