VIJAY KEDIA

The SMILE small-cap playbook and a string of Indian multibaggers that turned pocket change into a fortune.

Netfigo Verdict
on Vijay Kedia

He failed his Class 10 exams and inherited his father's debts as a teenager. Vijay Kedia turned around and built a portfolio worth roughly 1,400 crore rupees by hunting tiny companies before anyone else noticed them. His whole method is one word, SMILE, which stands for small size, medium experience, large aspiration, and extra-large market potential. In the mid-2000s he bought three little-known stocks that went up about 100 times over the next decade. Part investor, part showman, and one of the most quotable people in Indian markets.

CAREER & BACKGROUND

Vijay Kedia was born in 1962 into a Marwari stockbroking family in Kolkata. Markets were the family business.

Then his father died in 1978, when Vijay was still in school. He was so shaken he failed his Class 10 exams, and the family debts landed on him.

He started trading at 19. His first real taste of money came from Punjab Tractors, where a stake of around 35,000 rupees grew several times over.

The breakout was the 1992 bull run. He sold his shares at a huge premium and rolled the money into ACC cement, which then multiplied roughly ten times.

He had already moved to Mumbai around 1990 to chase the market full-time. Over the next decades he built Kedia Securities and became one of India's best-known small-cap investors.

COMPANIES & ROLES

His main outfit is Kedia Securities, the firm he runs in Mumbai. But Vijay Kedia is really known for his personal portfolio, which is public because his stakes are large enough to disclose.

His biggest single holding is Atul Auto, a maker of three-wheelers, which makes up around a fifth of his portfolio. He also holds Cera Sanitaryware, which makes bathroom fittings, plus Tejas Networks in telecom gear, Vaibhav Global in retail, and Sudarshan Chemical.

The pattern is always the same. Small or mid-sized companies in boring but growing industries, bought early and held for years while they scale up.

INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

His entire method is a word he coined. SMILE.

It stands for Small in size, Medium in experience, Large in aspiration, and Extra-large in market potential. In plain English, he wants a small company (so it has room to grow), run by a management team with some track record (Medium experience), that dreams big (Large aspiration), in an industry that could become huge (Extra-large potential).

Then he holds for five, ten, even fifteen years. He sums it up with his other favorite line.

Invest like a bull, sit like a bear, and watch like an eagle. Buy with conviction, then have the patience to just sit there while it compounds.

THE PLAYBOOK

Risk Approach

Kedia takes real risk. He buys tiny companies most people have never heard of, which can swing wildly or go nowhere for years.

His comfort with that comes from his own story. He often says that when you have nothing to lose, the whole world is there to gain, and he means it, because he started with debts.

He manages the danger through deep research into the management and the business, not through diversification. He would rather own a handful of small companies he understands cold than spread thin across dozens.

His hard rule is that he is an investor, not a trader, because trading is what nearly wiped him out early on.

Money Habits

Kedia keeps his money in the market rather than cashing out to a quiet life. He is famous for reinvesting and holding, not for a flashy lifestyle.

What sets him apart is his personality. He is a passionate singer, loves music and acting, and treats being a public teacher of investing as part of the job.

He gave a TEDx talk in 2018 and spoke at the London Business School the same year. He is active online, sharing his one-liners with a huge following.

Most of his wealth sits in the same small-cap stocks he has held for years.

BIGGEST WIN

The headline is roughly 100 times his money. In the middle of the 2000s, Kedia bought into three small, unglamorous companies.

Atul Auto, Aegis Logistics, and Cera Sanitaryware. None were household names.

Over the next 10 to 12 years, those stocks appreciated around 100 times as the businesses grew and the market finally noticed. It is the perfect example of his SMILE rule in action.

Small companies with big dreams, bought early, held with patience. Most investors would have sold after a double or a triple.

He sat through the whole ride.

BIGGEST MISTAKE

His biggest mistake came early and it nearly finished him. In his Kolkata years, before he became a patient long-term investor, Kedia was a trader and a speculator.

He chased quick profits, got burned, and ended up carrying debts with almost nothing to show for it. That pain is exactly why he now preaches against trading so loudly.

His line that trading is injurious to your wealth is not a joke he made up. It is a scar.

The lesson he took is simple. Real money comes from owning good businesses for years, not from betting on the next tick.

FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY

His rules come out as one-liners because he is genuinely quotable. He says to chase the story behind the stock, not the money on the table, because money makes you rich but the story makes you wealthy.

He believes a good investor needs just three things. Knowledge, courage, and patience.

He is brutal on trading, warning that it is injurious to your wealth, and that where smoking might kill you in 20 or 30 years, trading can do it the very next day. Underneath the jokes is a serious point.

Find a great small company, back the people running it, and then get out of the way and wait.

FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

Vijay Kedia is married and got married before he made the move from Kolkata to Mumbai around 1990. He has a family and is based in Mumbai.

For a serious investor he is unusually colorful in his personal life. He loves to sing and has a real passion for music and acting, which he talks about openly.

That showman streak is part of why he became one of the most recognizable faces in Indian markets, not just one of the richest.

EDUCATION

Kedia's formal education ended badly. His father died in 1978 while he was in Class 10, and the grief caused him to fail the exams.

There was no fancy degree and no business school for him at that stage. Everything he knows about markets he learned the hard way, by trading, losing, and slowly figuring out that patience beats speculation.

His real classroom was the stock exchange.

BOOKS & RESOURCES

Kedia is more of a learn-by-doing investor than a bookworm, and his best free resource is his own talks

His 2018 TEDx talk and his London Business School session lay out the SMILE approach in his own words, and his social media is a steady drip of investing one-liners
