Paul MacCready founded AeroVironment in 1971 to push the limits of what flying machines could be. He built the Gossamer Condor — the first human-powered aircraft — in his garage, won a £50,000 prize for it in 1977, and then crossed the English Channel in a solar-powered plane. His company eventually built the Raven mini drone, which became the most widely deployed military UAV in history. Then his engineers built the Switchblade loitering munition and in 2022 thousands of them went to Ukraine. MacCready died in 2007 and never saw any of it — but the company he founded is now at the center of the most consequential shift in modern warfare.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Paul MacCready was a Caltech-trained aeronautical engineer who had already won the World Soaring Championship in 1956 before he founded AeroVironment in 1971. The company started as an applied aeronautics research firm, working on wind energy, aviation efficiency, and anything that involved air moving over surfaces.

MacCready believed deeply in energy efficiency as an engineering challenge, decades before climate change was mainstream.

The public breakthrough came in 1977 when MacCready and his team built the Gossamer Condor — a human-powered aircraft made of Mylar, foam, and bicycle parts — and flew it around a figure-8 course in Kern County, California, winning the £50,000 Kremer Prize. Two years later the Gossamer Albatross crossed the English Channel under human power alone.

TIME Magazine later named MacCready one of the 100 greatest minds of the 20th century.

The company's pivot to military drones came through the US Army's demand for small, man-portable surveillance systems. AeroVironment developed the Raven — a 4.2-pound hand-launched drone that a soldier could throw into the air from a bag — and it became the most widely deployed military drone in history.

Over 19,000 systems have been delivered. From there, the path into loitering munitions was inevitable.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

AeroVironment makes money by selling unmanned aircraft systems and their associated software, ground control stations, and spare parts to the US military and allied foreign governments. The core business is US Department of Defense contracts, supplemented by foreign military sales (FMS) through the State Department to allies.

The company earns both on hardware sales and on long-term sustainment contracts that cover maintenance, upgrades, and training.

The Switchblade loitering munitions business operates differently from traditional ISR drones — these are single-use weapons, meaning demand is ongoing rather than one-time. Every Switchblade fired creates demand for a replacement.

That consumable dynamic is unusual for a defense hardware company and creates recurring revenue that most drone makers don't have.

THE PRODUCTS

The Raven is the foundation — a 4.2-pound hand-launched ISR drone used by over 50 militaries worldwide with 19,000+ systems delivered. The Switchblade 300 is the signature product of the Ukraine era: a tube-launched loitering munition that flies at 100mph, uses GPS and electro-optical guidance, and detonates on target.

The Switchblade 600 is the larger version, capable of defeating armored vehicles. The Puma AE is a medium small UAS that can land on water, used for maritime and littoral surveillance.

The JUMP 20 is a medium-altitude VTOL drone for persistent ISR missions requiring longer endurance than backpack-portable systems.

HOW THEY GREW

AeroVironment built its market position by being the only company that could deliver man-portable tactical drones at scale, with military-grade reliability, at a price point that allowed mass procurement. The Raven's dominance came from a combination of DARPA-funded early development, US Army contracts that funded production scale, and foreign military sales that spread the product globally before any competitor could catch up.

The Ukraine war was the inflection point for the Switchblade program. When the US government committed to arming Ukraine in February 2022, the Switchblade 300 and 600 went from a niche capability to a globally recognized product category.

Defense ministries across NATO that had never heard of loitering munitions were suddenly issuing urgent procurement requests. AeroVironment's production capacity became the constraint.

THE HARD PART

Production capacity and the transition from a premium-priced niche supplier to a mass-market defense manufacturer. The Switchblade's moment has arrived, but scaling production while maintaining quality on a precision weapon system is hard.

AeroVironment has historically been a small-batch, high-quality manufacturer. The demand signals from Ukraine and allied governments require a different kind of operation.

The company also faces increasing competition in the small drone space from new entrants — especially low-cost Chinese-origin commercial drones repurposed for military use (a trend the Ukraine war dramatically accelerated). AeroVironment's established US supply chain and security clearances are advantages, but the cost gap with commercial alternatives is a persistent pressure.

WHO BACKED THEM

AeroVironment completed its IPO on NASDAQ in January 2007, raising approximately $74 million at $17 per share. The company has funded growth through a combination of retained earnings and follow-on equity offerings, including a $200 million secondary offering in 2020 that funded the acquisitions of Telerob and Arcturus UAV.

The Arcturus deal, closed in 2021 for $405 million, significantly expanded AeroVironment's medium-altitude drone capabilities. Institutional investors including defense-sector funds have held significant positions throughout.
