Bandcamp was the internet's last honest music marketplace. Artists set their own prices. Fans pay directly. Bandcamp takes 15%. No algorithms deciding who gets heard. No playlists controlled by label deals. Just music and money, going directly from listener to creator. Artists have earned over $1 billion through the platform. Epic Games bought it in 2022, then sold it to Songtradr a year later, laying off half the staff. The most beloved music platform on the internet got passed around like a secondhand guitar.

Ethan Diamond founded Bandcamp in 2008 as a platform where independent musicians could sell music directly to fans. The timing was perfect.
The music industry was in chaos. Napster had killed CD sales.
Spotify was nascent. iTunes took 30%.
Artists had no good way to sell directly to their audience.
Bandcamp's model was revolutionary in its simplicity. Artists upload music.
They set a price (or let fans pay what they want). Bandcamp takes a 15% cut on digital sales and 10% on merchandise.
That is it. No mysterious algorithms.
No payola. No label gatekeeping.
The "name your price" feature was a masterstroke. Fans could pay more than the asking price as a way of directly supporting artists they loved.
Many did.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Marketplace commission. Bandcamp takes 15% of digital music sales and 10% of physical merchandise sales.
Artists keep the rest. No subscription fees for artists.
Bandcamp Fridays, started during COVID, waive the platform's revenue share entirely, letting 100% of sales go to artists. These events generate tens of millions in sales each time.
Bandcamp also offers a subscription product where fans pay monthly for access to an artist's full catalog.
THE PRODUCTS
The Bandcamp marketplace where artists sell music and merchandise directly to fans. Bandcamp Daily was the editorial arm (now largely dismantled).
The Bandcamp app for discovering and listening to purchased music. Artist analytics showing sales, geography, and fan engagement.
HOW THEY GREW
Word of mouth among independent musicians. Bandcamp became the default platform for artists who wanted to sell directly, from bedroom producers to established indie bands.
The editorial team curated "Bandcamp Daily," a respected music journalism outlet that covered underground and independent music. This editorial voice gave the platform cultural credibility.
Bandcamp Fridays during COVID drove massive spikes in sales and attention, earning goodwill that money cannot buy.
THE HARD PART
The ownership turmoil. Epic Games acquired Bandcamp in 2022 as part of its content platform strategy.
Fifteen months later, Epic sold Bandcamp to Songtradr, a music licensing company. Songtradr immediately laid off approximately half of Bandcamp's staff, including the entire editorial team and Bandcamp Daily.
The layoffs devastated the Bandcamp community. The platform's identity was built on supporting independent artists, and mass layoffs felt like a betrayal of that mission.
