Robin Rombach, Andreas Blattmann, and Patrick Esser were the core researchers behind latent diffusion, the technique that powers Stable Diffusion. That model, released through Stability AI in 2022, put image generation in the hands of millions and started the whole text-to-image wave.

Instead of riding that fame at a big company, the team walked away. In 2024 they set up Black Forest Labs in Freiburg, a university town near Germany's Black Forest.

The plan was to own their research instead of handing it to someone else. Andreessen Horowitz backed them with a $31 million seed round almost immediately.

Black Forest Labs builds AI models that create and edit images from text. You type what you want and the model draws it.

Companies pay to use these models, either through an API or by licensing them to build into their own apps. The customers are the interesting part.

Adobe, Canva, and Meta all use FLUX inside products that millions of people touch. So Black Forest Labs often sits one layer down, powering the image features of tools you already know rather than selling directly to you.

FLUX is the flagship, a family of text-to-image models known for sharp, realistic results and unusually good handling of text inside images. FLUX.1 Kontext extended the lineup into editing, letting users change parts of an existing image with a prompt instead of starting over.

The models come in open versions for developers and premium versions for paying customers. FLUX is the reason the company matters, and it is already baked into tools from Adobe to Meta.

The growth hack was openness plus quality. The team released strong versions of FLUX that developers could download and run for free, racking up tens of millions of downloads on Hugging Face.

That built a huge community fast. At the same time they sold premium models to big companies that needed the best quality and legal cover.

Open models pull in the crowd. Enterprise deals pull in the money.

The reputation from Stable Diffusion meant serious partners took the first call.

Image generation is a brutal market. OpenAI, Google, and Midjourney are all pushing hard, and the models keep leapfrogging each other every few months.

There is also the legal cloud. AI image tools have been sued over the copyrighted art used to train them, and that fight is far from settled.

Black Forest Labs has to stay ahead on quality while working through rules that could reshape the whole field. Being the best today guarantees nothing next quarter.

Andreessen Horowitz got in first, leading both a $31 million seed in 2024 and a later Series A. Nvidia joined too, along with European funds like Creandum, Earlybird, and Northzone.

A run of famous angels signed on, including Garry Tan and Michael Ovitz. The December 2025 Series B, led by Salesforce Ventures, raised $300 million and valued the company at $3.25 billion.

Total funding passed $450 million. When both a16z and Salesforce are on your list, the message is clear.
