BUDIBASE

Netfigo Verdict
on Budibase

Budibase is the scrappiest player in the open-source internal tools wars — a two-founder shop from Belfast that took on Retool and Appsmith with a GPL-licensed low-code platform and somehow carved out real traction. They grew past 20,000 GitHub stars organically, long before the money arrived. LocalGlobe backed them, which is how you know they are being taken seriously in Europe's developer infrastructure scene. The bet is that being genuinely open-source and lightweight beats being feature-rich and locked in.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Michael Shanks and Martin McKeaveney were software developers in Belfast, Northern Ireland, doing consulting work and building web apps for clients. They kept running into the same problem: clients needed internal tools — portals, dashboards, admin panels — and building them from scratch every time was expensive and repetitive.

They could not find a tool that was open-source, flexible enough for real workflows, and self-hostable without enterprise pricing. In 2019, they decided to build one themselves.

They launched Budibase on GitHub and grew the community through developer forums and technical content before raising any institutional money. The product resonated immediately with small dev teams and solo developers who needed something between a spreadsheet and a full custom build.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Open-source with a cloud SaaS tier and enterprise licensing. The self-hosted version is free under the GNU GPL license.

Budibase Cloud is a hosted version on a monthly per-user subscription. Enterprise licensing adds SSO integration, custom branding, priority support, and on-premise deployment for organizations that need IT compliance.

The positioning is deliberately approachable — lower price points than Retool and Appsmith Cloud, targeting smaller teams and budget-conscious buyers.

THE PRODUCTS

Budibase Builder is the core product — a browser-based visual editor for creating internal apps connected to databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, REST APIs, Google Sheets, Airtable, and others), with drag-and-drop UI components and an automation engine for basic workflow logic. Templates for common use cases — employee portals, inventory management, CRM-lite, support ticket systems — reduce time-to-value significantly.

The self-hosted version runs on Docker or Kubernetes. Budibase Cloud adds team collaboration, custom domains, and managed backups.

HOW THEY GREW

Community-led and content-led. Budibase grew entirely through organic developer discovery on GitHub, Reddit, and Hacker News before the funding rounds.

The founders were active in developer communities, responding to issues and shipping fast. After securing funding, they invested in YouTube tutorials, integration guides, and template libraries — pre-built apps that users can import and modify.

The template approach dramatically lowers the activation barrier: instead of starting from a blank canvas, teams start from a working CRUD app for their use case.

THE HARD PART

The classic open-source monetization problem, compressed into a smaller company with less runway than its competitors. Budibase has to convert a free, self-hosted user base into paying cloud or enterprise customers — while Appsmith (with $41M) and Retool (with $145M+) are doing the same thing with larger teams and more distribution power.

The UK-origin of the company also means most of their natural investor and customer network is in Europe, while the biggest enterprise deal opportunities are in the US. They relocated leadership to San Francisco specifically to close that gap.
