THE ORIGIN STORY

Jonathan Rothberg — a serial biotech entrepreneur who previously founded 454 Life Sciences (sold to Roche) and Ion Torrent (sold to Life Technologies for $725 million) — asked a simple question: why does an ultrasound machine cost $100,000 when a smartphone has more computing power? In 2011, he founded Butterfly Network to build an ultrasound-on-a-chip.

The breakthrough: replacing the traditional piezoelectric transducer (expensive, fragile, single-purpose) with a semiconductor chip that could image the entire body from one device. The iQ launched in 2018 at $1,999.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Handheld, whole-body ultrasound device that connects to a smartphone. Traditional ultrasound machines cost $20,000-$200,000 and require trained technicians.

The AI layer (Butterfly Auto) helps non-specialists interpret images. Partnerships with veterinary companies expand the addressable market.

The subscription model creates recurring revenue as the installed base grows.

THE HARD PART

Adoption. Doctors are creatures of habit — they've used traditional ultrasound for decades and are skeptical of a $2,499 handheld device.

The image quality, while impressive for the price, doesn't match a $100,000 cart-based system for complex diagnostics. Sales cycles in healthcare are notoriously slow.

The stock has dropped over 90% from its SPAC peak as revenue growth hasn't matched the hype. The device is a breakthrough, but turning a breakthrough into a business at scale is a different challenge.
