Clubhouse was the hottest app on earth for exactly three months in early 2021 — Elon Musk showed up, Oprah showed up, everyone was in a "room" talking about crypto and self-help. Then vaccines arrived, people went outside, and the app collapsed from 10 million daily users to basically nobody. The most spectacular hype-cycle crash in social media history. A $4 billion valuation that evaporated faster than a Snapchat message.

Paul Davison (a serial entrepreneur) and Rohan Seth (a former Google engineer) launched Clubhouse in March 2020, just as COVID lockdowns began. The timing was perfect — people were stuck at home, craving human connection, and audio-only conversations felt like the phone calls and dinner parties they were missing.
The app was initially invite-only on iOS, which created artificial scarcity and made it feel exclusive. When Elon Musk hosted a room in February 2021, the app crashed from demand.
For a brief period, Clubhouse felt like the future of social media.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Clubhouse is an audio-only social network where users join live conversation "rooms" on various topics. Anyone can listen, and moderators can invite listeners to speak.
Revenue was planned through subscriptions, tipping, and ticketed events, but monetization never reached significant scale. The app is free to use.
THE PRODUCTS
Clubhouse app (live audio rooms), Replays (recorded rooms), Group chats, Universal Search, Clubs (topic-based communities)
HOW THEY GREW
Pivot. Clubhouse has tried to reinvent itself with features like group chats, recorded rooms, and integration with other platforms.
But the core challenge remains — the live audio format requires synchronous time commitment, which is harder to maintain than scrolling a feed. The company has laid off most of its staff.
THE HARD PART
Retention. Once the novelty wore off and people could meet in person again, usage collapsed.
Clubhouse was an invite-only iOS app during its peak — by the time it launched on Android and opened to everyone, the moment had passed. Twitter (Spaces), Spotify (Greenroom), and Facebook all launched competing audio features, commoditizing the format.
The content was also ephemeral — nothing was recorded, so there was no library to come back to.
