CONTENTFUL

Netfigo Verdict
on Contentful

The headless CMS that separated content from presentation and accidentally became essential infrastructure for modern web development. Contentful stores content as structured data and delivers it via APIs to any frontend — website, app, smartwatch, whatever. 30% of the Fortune 500 uses it. Valued at $3 billion. The Berlin-based company that made WordPress look like a fax machine.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Sascha Konietzke and Paolo Negri were building websites and realized traditional CMSs (WordPress, Drupal) were built for a world where content only appeared on one website. In 2013, they founded Contentful to create a "headless CMS" — a system that stores content as structured data and delivers it through APIs to any channel.

The "headless" part means there's no built-in frontend. Developers use any framework they want (React, Next.js, etc.) and pull content from Contentful via API.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

SaaS subscriptions based on usage (API calls, content entries, environments). Free tier for small projects.

Team plans start at $300/month. Enterprise plans for large organizations with custom pricing.

The platform is sticky — once a company structures all its content in Contentful, migrating is extremely painful.

THE PRODUCTS

Contentful Content Platform — API-first headless CMS for structured content. Contentful Studio — visual editing tools for non-technical users.

Content Orchestration — workflows for content creation, review, and publishing. App Framework — extensible platform for custom integrations.

HOW THEY GREW

Developer-first adoption. Contentful was built for developers, not marketing teams.

Developers chose it because the API-first approach worked perfectly with modern frontend frameworks. Once developers built on Contentful, marketing teams inherited it.

The bottom-up motion scaled to enterprise through "land and expand."

THE HARD PART

WordPress still dominates by volume. For non-technical users, Contentful is harder to use than WordPress or Webflow.

Competition from Sanity, Strapi (open-source), and Hygraph is increasing. The "headless CMS" market has become crowded.
