Sanity is the headless CMS that developers actually enjoy using — which, in the content management world, is like finding a comfortable dentist's chair. While WordPress powers 40% of the web with a monolithic architecture from 2003, Sanity lets developers build content infrastructure that works with any frontend. The Norwegian startup is quietly becoming the backbone of content for companies like Nike, Figma, and National Geographic.

www.sanity.ioTHE ORIGIN STORY
Four Norwegian developers — Even Westvang, Magnus Hillestad, Øyvind Rostad, and Simen Svale Skogsrud — had spent years building content-heavy websites and were frustrated that every CMS forced them into rigid templates. In 2017, they built Sanity as a "content platform" — not just a CMS, but a real-time, structured content backend that developers could customize completely.
The key innovation was treating content as structured data (not HTML blobs) and providing a real-time API that any frontend could consume. Sanity Studio, the editing interface, is an open-source React application that developers can customize and extend.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Usage-based SaaS pricing. Free tier for small projects.
Growth plan at $15/user/month. Enterprise plans for large organizations with custom pricing.
Revenue scales with API usage, datasets, and team size. The model is designed to be free for experimentation and expensive only when a company is using it seriously in production.
THE PRODUCTS
Sanity Studio (customizable content editing interface). Sanity Content Lake (real-time content API and backend).
GROQ (Sanity's open-source query language). Sanity AI Assist (AI-powered content tools).
Portable Text (rich text format).
HOW THEY GREW
Developer-first community building. Sanity invested heavily in documentation, tutorials, starter templates, and a developer community.
They sponsor conferences, maintain integrations with every popular frontend framework, and their free tier is generous enough that developers choose Sanity for side projects before recommending it at work. The "content as data" message resonates with developers tired of WordPress.
THE HARD PART
Competing against established players (WordPress, Contentful, Strapi) and newer ones (Payload CMS, Keystatic) in a crowded CMS market. Sanity needs to keep developers choosing it over both the free open-source alternatives and the well-funded competitors.
