Ingmar Hoerr's 1999 PhD thesis at the University of Tübingen demonstrated that injecting mRNA into cells could trigger an immune response — a foundational discovery for the entire mRNA field. In 2000, he co-founded CureVac to commercialize mRNA technology.
For 20 years, CureVac was a small German biotech working on mRNA therapeutics with limited commercial success. Then COVID-19 hit, and mRNA technology became the most important biotech platform on Earth.
CureVac received €300 million from the German government and raced to develop a COVID vaccine alongside Moderna and BioNTech.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

THE HARD PART
The COVID vaccine failed. CureVac's CVnCoV COVID vaccine showed only 47% efficacy in Phase 3 trials — far below Moderna's 94% and BioNTech/Pfizer's 95%.
The failure was devastating: while Moderna and BioNTech made tens of billions from their vaccines, CureVac got nothing. The stock dropped 50% on the efficacy data.
The company pivoted to a second-generation vaccine, but by then the market had moved on. The failure highlighted how narrow the margin between success and failure is in biotech — all three companies used mRNA, but tiny differences in formulation led to wildly different outcomes.
