Geordie Rose was a PhD student in physics at the University of British Columbia when he co-founded D-Wave in 1999. His thesis advisor, Alexandre Zagoskin, had been working on quantum computing theory.
Rose's insight was commercial: quantum computing was always treated as a pure research problem, but Rose believed you could build a business around it long before the technology was perfected. D-Wave took a different technical approach than most quantum computing researchers: quantum annealing, which is optimized for solving optimization problems rather than running arbitrary quantum algorithms.
They built their first 28-qubit processor in 2007, and in 2011, they sold their first commercial system to Lockheed Martin for approximately $10 million. Google, NASA, and Los Alamos National Laboratory followed as customers.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
D-Wave sells quantum computing hardware (their Advantage systems with 5,000+ qubits) and cloud access through Leap, their quantum cloud service. The cloud platform offers a pay-per-use model where developers submit optimization problems.
They focus on optimization problems — logistics, scheduling, portfolio optimization, machine learning feature selection — where quantum annealing can potentially find better solutions faster than classical methods. They also offer hybrid solvers that combine quantum and classical computing for practical applications.
THE PRODUCTS
D-Wave Advantage is their flagship quantum computer with 5,000+ qubits and 15-way qubit connectivity. Leap is their quantum cloud service providing real-time access.
Ocean is their open-source Python SDK for quantum programming. They also offer hybrid solvers that combine quantum and classical resources to tackle larger problems than pure quantum can handle.
HOW THEY GREW
D-Wave was first to market, which gave them a head start in enterprise relationships. Their strategy has been: ship real hardware, get it into the hands of real customers (NASA, Google, Lockheed Martin, Volkswagen), and iterate.
Going public via SPAC in 2022 provided capital to fund next-generation systems. They've also invested heavily in making quantum computing accessible through their Leap cloud platform and Ocean SDK (open-source development tools).

THE HARD PART
D-Wave faces a fundamental credibility challenge. Many quantum computing researchers argue that quantum annealing is not "real" quantum computing and cannot provide the exponential speedups that gate-based quantum computers theoretically offer.
Academic benchmarks have produced mixed results — sometimes D-Wave's machines are faster than classical computers, sometimes they're not. The company also faces competition from gate-based quantum companies (IonQ, IBM, Google) that claim their approach is more general-purpose.
