Tristan Handy was running a data analytics consultancy called Fishtown Analytics when he noticed that every client had the same problem: they could get data into a warehouse (using Fivetran or Stitch) but transforming it into useful tables was a mess of tangled SQL scripts with no testing, no documentation, and no version control.
He built dbt as an open-source tool in 2016 to bring software engineering best practices to data transformation. Write SQL models.
Test them. Document them.
Version control them in Git. Deploy them with CI/CD.
It sounds obvious but it was revolutionary for data teams.
