Deepnote is what Jupyter notebooks should have been — collaborative, cloud-hosted, and actually pleasant to use. Three Czech founders built it because they were data scientists tired of fighting with local notebook setups. $20 million raised and used by data teams at companies like Samsung and Gusto. It’s Google Docs for data science notebooks, and anyone who’s tried to share a Jupyter notebook via email knows why that matters.

deepnote.comTHE ORIGIN STORY
Jakub Jurovy, Jan Matas, and Filip Stollar were data science students and practitioners in the Czech Republic who were frustrated with Jupyter notebooks. Setting up environments locally was painful.
Collaboration was nonexistent. Sharing results meant exporting PDFs or screenshots.
They founded Deepnote in 2019 to build a cloud-native notebook that was collaborative from the ground up. Real-time editing, built-in environment management, and integrations with modern data tools.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Freemium SaaS. Free tier for individual users with basic features.
Team plans from $20/user/month add collaboration, scheduling, and integrations. Enterprise plans include SSO, advanced security, and custom deployments.
THE PRODUCTS
Collaborative data notebooks with Python, SQL, and R. Real-time multiplayer editing.
Built-in data connections to warehouses and databases. Scheduling and automation.
AI-powered code generation. Publishing — share notebooks as interactive reports.
HOW THEY GREW
THE HARD PART
Jupyter is free and deeply entrenched. Google Colab is free for basic use.
Hex, Observable, and Databricks notebooks all compete. The notebook space is crowded and the switching costs from free alternatives are real.
